12 affordable cars & SUVs with MASSIVE 1 lakh rupees+ GST discounts

On July 1st, GST (Goods & Service Tax) will kick into effect. Automakers and dealers around India are offering massive discounts of over 1 lakh on many affordable cars and SUVs. Here’s the wrap.

Renault Duster

Discount offered: Rs. 3 lakh

Renault Duster1

The Duster is a well-packaged compact SUV that is doing well in the market. The Duster gets a discount only on the top-end RxZ (O) 2WD option. The Duster is robustly built and offers outstanding ride quality over any kind of road. The top end Duster listed here is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine that generates 109 Bhp of maximum power. There is also Rs. 1 lakh discount on the 4X2 AMT model of the car.

Any risk involved?

The interiors of the Duster feels low quality and outdated when compared to the competition in the market. The quality of the plastic used is not very premium and the NVH levels are not extremely good. Even after the price cut, Duster will cost more than Rs. 13 lakh, on-r0ad, which is good enough money to buy 7-seater in the market. If you really wish to have space and like premium quality, Duster will not fulfil it.

Nissan Sunny

Discount offered: Rs. 2 lakh

Nissan Sunny

The Nissan Sunny is a mid-size sedan that offers extremely spacious space. The Sunny has good ride quality and handles well at high speed. The sedan also gets decent interiors and is a car for people who love to be driven around while they enjoy the rear seat. The car is powered by the tried and tested 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine and 1.5-litre petrol engine. The petrol engine is also offered with a CVT automatic option.

Any risk involved?

The Sunny isn’t a top selling car, which means that resale value is pretty poor. Also, after sales service of Nissan isn’t good. If you stay away from the bigger cities, avoid the Sunny. Also, the car also looks outdated not. Nissan launched the Sunny in 2011 and gave a mid-life update in 2014. After that, nothing much has changed in the vehicle.

Nissan Terrano

Discount offered: Rs. 2 lakh

Nissan Terrano Groove Edition

The Nissan Terrano is the rebadged version of the Renault Duster. The Terrano offers premium styling over the Duster while keeping the other practicality alive. The Terrano gets a robust built quality and gets ground clearance of 205 mm. The car gets the same engines as the Duster. There is a 1.5-litre diesel engine and 1.6-litre petrol engine.

Any risk involved?

The Terrano does not sell much in the market because the Duster offers more value-for-money. The car also misses out on several features like climate control. The under par dealer network is also worrisome. If you do not live near a big city, avoiding the Terrano will be a better choice.

Renault Lodgy

Discount offered: Rs. 3 lakh

Lodgy

The Renault Lodgy is an extremely good vehicle to drive around. The MPV based on the Duster platform gets spacious interiors and good handling. The ride quality of the vehicle is also extremely good.

Any risk involved?

The Lodgy only sells around 200 units per month while the competition like Ertiga sells in thousands. The low popularity of the vehicle makes it an unpopular car in the used car market too. Despite being an MPV, the Lodgy also offers limited space in the second row, which can be frustrating for a buyer who is looking for space.

Skoda Rapid

Discount offered: Rs. Rs. 2 lakh

Skoda-Rapid-Right-Front-Three-Quarter-83271

The Skoda Rapid is a good looking car. The European design and Skoda’s family design makes it very premium looking vehicle in the segment. The smart looking Rapid is also tech loaded with LED DRLs and projector lamps, touch screen infotainment system and rearview camera with parking sensors. The Rapid powered by 1.6-litre petrol that produces 103 Bhp-153  Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel that produces 108 Bhp-250Nm. The diesel variant also comes with DSG automatic transmission.

Any risk involved?

Skoda’s below par after sales service is famous in India. Many customers have complained about the rising ownership costs and unreliable support. Skoda also has a thin network of dealerships across India and the resale value depreciates quicker than the industry average.

Renault Scala

Discount offered: Rs. 1.1 lakh

Renault Scala

The Scala is the rebadged version of the Nissan Sunny. The car looks very upmarket and premium than the Sunny and offers explicit space on the inside. The Scala is powered by 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine, same as the Sunny.

Any risk involved?

While Scala looks a bit more premium than the Sunny, it is quite expensive and offers similar specifications. The built quality is good but the stability goes for a toss at above 120 km/h. Also, there are many better choices available in the market like the Ciaz and the City. The low selling Scala also suffers from mediocre resale value.
