India has now turned into a SUV-centric market, and why not, considering the road conditions that prevail here. One look at the sales charts will tell you how much the demand for SUVs across the spectrum is. Keeping that in mind, here are 15 more SUVs coming our way in the next year:
Launch During: Festive season / Expected Price: 6-10 lakhs
Tata will launch the all-new Nexon towards the festive season this year. The new vehicle will be Tata’s first attempt at the ever growing compact SUV market. The Nexon has already been spied undisguised a few times. It will feature an all-new 1.5 liter turbo diesel engine making close to 108 Bhp and 260 Nm.
This engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The car will come with driving mode options as well. A petrol is also expected, which will be a turbocharged unit based on the 1.2 liter 3-cylinder engine of the Tiago. The car will also get a 6.5″ stand-alone screen for infotainment.
Maruti S-Cross facelift
Launch During: Festive season / Expected Price: 10-14 lakhs
Maruti will launch a facelift of the S-Cross towards the festive season. The vehicle hasn’t done as well as the company had hoped. The new looks include a new bumper, a new grille and new headlamps/tail lamps.
The new vehicle will get improved looks and most likely an all-new 1.5 liter petrol engine. The S-Cross currently is offered in only diesel guise, with either a 1.3 liter or a 1.6 liter engine option on offer.
According to our sources, test production of the same has already begun and the company will launch the S-Cross during the festive season.
Launch During: Festive season / Expected Price: 7-10 lakhs
Ford will launch the all-new Ecosport later in the year. The vehicle was spied by us just yesterday. The main changes are to the looks of the vehicle, which means you will get new projector headlamps with LED DRLs. In addition to that, the interiors have been spruced up with a new touch screen system replacing the cluttered dashboard.
Under the hood, we expect the same engines to be on offer. So the 1.5 liter diesel with 99 Bhp and 205 Nm, the 1.0 liter Ecoboost with 123 Bhp and 170 Nm and the 1.5 liter naturally aspirated petrol engine (110 Bhp and 140 Nm) mated to the 6 speed dual clutch transmission will be carried over.
Launch During: early 2018 / Expected Price: 10-15 lakhs
Hyundai’s popular compact SUV, the Creta will get an update sometime early next year. The vehicle has been successful in the Indian market. The new update will give it a refresh, both on the outside and the inside. Under the hood, we expect the same engines to continue, however the Creta will most likely get a mild-hybrid technology too.
Launch During: Festive season / Expected Price: 30 lakhs+
Skoda’s flagship SUV, the Kodiaq will be on sale in the Indian market by the festive season. The vehicle will be Skoda’s first 7-seat SUV to be on sale in the market. The Kodiaq will take on the Fortuner and the Endeavour. Power will come from a 2.0 liter TDi engine. State of tune is still not known however.
Launch During: June / Expected Price: 25 lakhs+
VW will unveil the Tiguan later next month. The vehicle has already been spotted at dealerships in the country. It will be on offer in two variants, Comfortline and Highline. The Tiguan will also be powered by a 2.0 liter TDi engine but this one will be mated to a 7-speed DSG as opposed to the 6-speed DSG on the Passat. We expect the 147 Bhp state of tune to be on offer in the Tiguan.
Launch During: July / Expected Price: 18-25 lakhs
The Compass is among the most highly anticipated SUVs for 2017. The vehicle was showcased to the Indian media last month and the vehicle is expected to launch by July this year. The vehicle will come with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol is a 1.4 liter turbocharged unit making 160 Bhp and 250 Nm. The diesel will be a 2.0 liter unit making 170 Bhp and 350 Nm. The vehicle will be offered in both 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive variants, along with manual and automatic gearbox options.
Launch During: Festive season / Expected Price: 15 lakhs+
The Kaptur will be the next model which will be launched by the Renault brand. The vehicle is based on the BO platform, which under pins the Duster too. The vehicle has been spotted testing in our country a few times. Globally, engine options include a 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter petrol engine. However we expect the 1.5 liter K9 unit to be on offer as well.
Mahindra XUV700 (Rexton replacement codenamed Y400)
Launch During: 2018 / Expected Price: 20 lakhs+
Mahindra currently has the Ssangyong Rexton to take on the Fortuner. Sadly, the Ssangyong brand never caught on in India which has made Mahindra scrap their plan of bringing in any of the Korean manufacturer’s products in the future. What it will however do is to create an all-new large SUV, codenamed the Y400 based on the new Rexton which will have a Mahindra badge on it.
So you will see a flagship Mahindra product coming from the brand that will sit above the XUV500. It will most likely be powered by a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine making 184 Bhp and 420 Nm. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer. The vehicle is expected to reach our shores by the end of 2017, which makes it an interesting vehicle to watch out for.
Mahindra compact SUV ( Tivoli based) S201
Launch During: 2018 / Expected Price: 7-10 lakks
Mahindra has begun work on an all-new compact SUV. This will take on the Brezza and Ecosport when launched. Yes the company has the TUV and the Nuvosport, however this one will be based on the Tivoli SUV. Details are not yet clear, however it will feature a 1.5 liter diesel engine from the TUV. We expect the company to have more luxurious interiors on offer with the S201. Expect this SUV to be unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018.
