2012 Tata Nano launched with better mileage and new features

Tata Motors has launched the 2012 Tata Nano with improved fuel efficiency (25 kmpl), drivability, ride quality and some new features. This is no surprise as CarToq had earlier reported that the launch of new Nano was soon to come. As expected, there are no changes in the price of the 2012 Nano despite the upgrades offered.

The new Nano starts at Rs. 1.40 lakh prices of other models are mentioned in the following table:

The Nano is pitched in a segment of its own, though price-wise, the top-end variant competes with the base variant of the Maruti 800 (non-AC, Rs. 1.97 lakh). Let’s take a closer look at the upgrades offered in the 2012 Nano.

Looks, space and comfort

The 2012 Nano is identical to the previous model except for minor changes such as the inclusion of a left hand side mirror and full wheel caps in the LX variant. On the inside, the 2012 Nano LX gets beige fabric with a silver metallic centre console and beige-black door trims. The CX variant gets black fabric with a silver dust central console and black door trims. The 2012 Nano is available in four new colors i.e. Pearl White (LX), Papaya Orange (CX), Mojito Green (LX) and Neon Rush (CX).

Though there are no changes with regard to space, the company has improved the cushioning on the seats making them more comfortable. Further, the suspension has been softened to offer a better ride at low speeds. The new Nano comes with an anti-roll bar which will help reduce the effort required to turn the steering (no power steering yet). The booster assisted brakes which were earlier offered only on the Nano LX, are now standard across all the variants.

Performance and Mileage

The 2012 Nano is powered by the same 624 cc engine that the outgoing Nano had but produces slightly more power, 37.4 bhp against the earlier 34.5 bhp. It also makes more torque (51 Nm) against the earlier 48 Nm. This may improve the Nano’s drive slightly. The ARAI-certified fuel economy of the 2012 Nano is 25 kmpl up from the earlier 23.6 kmpl. This makes the Nano, the ‘most fuel efficient petrol car’ in India.

Price and features

The base variant of Nano priced at Rs. 1.40 lakh, does not get an AC. The CX variant priced at Rs. 1.70 lakh gets an AC but doesn’t get body colored bumpers, central locking etc. The top trim Nano LX priced at Rs. 1.96 lakh comes with features like AC with heater, front & rear fog lamps, front power windows, electronic trip meter, cup holders, door map pockets, full wheel caps, a spoiler and central locking.

Summary

The 2012 Nano is an effort by Tata Motors to improve the USP of the car by marginally improving its fuel efficiency, power and torque, ride quality and comfort. It is however yet to be seen if the new Nano is a completely safe car because there have been cases of Nano catching fire ever since its launch in March 2009. Also, the much expected Nano diesel launch has been postponed.
