2014 Hyundai Verna Facelift coming to India by year-end?

The C-Segment sedan space in India has seen a couple of new launches (Linea, Fiesta and Sunny Facelifts) and the launch frenzy is expected to gain momentum during the festive season with 3 more cars lined up in the form of the Volkswagen Vento DSG, Skoda Rapid DSG and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The Hyundai Verna Facelift seems like the latest entrant to this burgeoning launch list.

Hyundai India could launch the facelifted Verna sedan by the end of this year. Known as the Solaris in Russia, the Verna recently got a mid life makeover in that part of the world. Although Hyundai did give the India-spec Verna minor tweaks such as daytime running LEDs and projector headlamps recently, the car needs a newer face to combat the new best selling C-Segment sedan in India, the 2014 Honda City.

The Verna with a facelifted front end gets changes including new headlamps, revised grille and a re-profiled front bumper. The overall profile of the car remains unchanged with the rear of the car getting the LED tail lamp treatment, along with new bumper inserts. The interiors don’t see any changes though. Mechanical additions on the 2014 Verna/Solaris facelift include the addition of the 6 speed automatic gearbox to the petrol powered variant.

Apart from these changes, the Verna retains the 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter engine displacements for both petrol and turbo diesel motors. The current Verna sold in India gets a lazy four speed automatic gearbox in the diesel automatic variant, a no-no at a time when Volkswagen is planning a dual clutch automatic gearbox equipped Vento Diesel. Equipping the diesel automatic variant of the Verna with a six speed gearbox is likely to be on Hyundai’s radar.

Currently, Hyundai India offers the Verna with 1.4 liter petrol and diesel engines, which are earmarked for the entry-level models. Higher up the variant chain, the Verna is powered by 1.6 liter petrol and turbo diesel engine options. Both the 1.6 liter petrol and turbo diesel engine models get 4 speed automatic gearbox options. All the engines are also available with manual gearboxes.
