2014 Volkswagen Vento Sedan, now with 1.5 litre diesel automatic

The facelifted Volkswagen Vento C-Segment sedan is now on sale in India. The car, in its latest 2014 iteration, gains several mechanical changes even as it goes under the scalpel for a mild, nip and tuck job. First, let’s look at what is new on the Vento Facelift’s mechanical side. The 1.6 liter TDI turbo diesel engine, known for its strong performance makes way for a smaller motor. While the new engine is also a 4 cylinder turbo diesel, it loses about 100 cc, to end up with a 1.5 liter displacement. This said, power and torque levels remain unaffected, at 103 Bhp and 250 Nm respectively.

The new 1.5 liter TDI turbo diesel motor will soon hit the local manufacturing circuit as Volkswagen India has firmed up plans to produce this engine at its Chakan factory. What this means to you, the Vento buyer/owner is that the maintenance and long term ownership costs will see a dip as localization levels go up. As far as Volkswagen is concerned, localization translates into fatter margins in the long term and the added flexibility of pricing its cars more competitively. Moving on, the 1.5 TDI motor also gains a dual clutch automatic gearbox in the form of the DQ200 unit.

Light and quick shifting, the DQ200 DSG gearbox us bound to make the Vento Diesel a class act when it comes to out-and-out performance in the C-Segment automatic sedan category.  The 1.5 TDI motor is also available with a 5 speed manual transmission.  Other engines of the Vento – the 1.6 liter MPI petrol (103 Bhp-153 Nm) and the 1.2 liter TSI turbo petrol (103 Bhp-175 Nm) – remain unchanged. The 1.6 liter MPI petrol uses a 5 speed manual gearbox while the 1.2 liter TSI turbo petrol mill shares the DQ200 DSG dual clutch gearbox with the 1.5 TDI motor.

Coming to the botox job on the Vento, the car gains new headlamps, new colours and alloy wheel design while the interiors gain a new steering wheel, and satin finish for center console and gear shifter. With the Vento Facelift, Volkswagen has rejigged variants, and now offers the 1.5 TDI AT and the 1.2 TSI AT in Comfortline and Highline trims, giving more choice to the buyer. The Vento Facelift is available in ten variants, spread equally across petrol and diesel engine options. The five petrol variants consist of the 1.6 MPI Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, the 1.2 TSI Comfortline and Highline.

The 5 diesel variants of the Vento Facelift consist of the 1.5 TDI MT Trendline, Comfortline and Highline, and the 1.5 TDI AT Comfortline and the Highline. All Vento models come with driver and passenger airbag as standard fare. However, ABS+EBD is offered only on the Comfortline and Highline variants.
