Jeep will unwrap its entry level, B-Segment SUV at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, which will be held later this year. The first images of the 2015 Jeep Renegade, the B-Segment SUV bound to India, apart from other international markets, have surfaced on the interweb.
The new Jeep baby SUV, previously touted to be known as the Jeepster, only to be changed to Laredo, has finally been christened the Renegade. The Renegade SUV will share its platform with the Fiat 500X Crossover, a crossover that is due to make its debut later this year, with sales to begin by the end of 2014.
Both the Fiat 500X and the Jeep Renegade SUVs will be built on the US Small Wide architecture. Like the Fiat 500 X, the Renegade will be built at Fiat’s Meifi factory in Italy. While the 500X is said to begin sales by the end of this year, the Renegade could go on sale early next year.
Jeep’s Renegade name plate: A brief history
American SUV brand, now owned by the Fiat-Chrysler group, introduced the Renegade name plate in 1970. Back then, the Jeep Renegade was aimed at younger buyers, very similar to how the 2015 Renegade is being readied up to attract a younger set of buyers to the Jeep fold. The Renegade had a production run until 1987, before the nameplate made way for the Wrangler YJ. Jeep briefly resurrected the Renegade name plate between 1991 and 1993, when the Renegade name plate was suffixed to the Wrangler YJs sold during that period. The Renegade name plate’s other latest appearance was in concept form, during 2008.
The Renegade will be Jeep’s entry level model, designed and priced to appeal to a wide swathe of SUV buyers in both developed and emerging car markets of the world. Stylistically, the Renegade features butch looks and a panoramic, removable sun roof that seeks to simulate the open top feel of Jeeps such as the Wrangler and Rubicon.
The Jeep Renegade will share turbo petrol and turbo diesel engine options with the Fiat 500X crossover. However, the Jeep Renegade model is said to be oriented towards buyers who seek an alternative lifestyle that embodies off road trails. A trail worthy version of the Renegade is also said to be in the works for the hard core off roading crowd.
In that light, expect high ground clearance, a clean underbody, short overhangs and a proper four wheel drive system with a low ratio instead of an all wheel drive system. In India, the Jeep B-Segment SUV will be built at the Fiat factory in Ranjangaon, off Pune. This factory will cater to both the domestic and export markets.
While Fiat-Chrysler is going slow on bringing the Jeep brand to India, Mr Nagesh Basavanahalli, the head of Fiat-Chrysler India has noted that plans to launch the first crop of CBU Jeep SUVs such as the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee are definitely on. The B-Segment (Renegade) and C-Segment SUVs are likely to follow the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee into India in 2015 and 2016.
