7-Seater SUVs and MPVs launched in 2012

There are a lot of new options for 7-seater MPVs and SUVs in India now. Here we take a look at seven seaters launched in 2012 and see which of them have a good combination of space and comfort, especially in the last row of seats.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Price: Rs.5.92 lakh to Rs.8.63 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga hasn’t been in the Indian market for long but it has already garnered impressive numbers.

The petrol Ertiga is powered by a 1,373 cc, 4-cylinder motor that makes 94 bhp of power and 130 nm @. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel Ertiga is powered by a 1,248 cc, 4-cylinder motor that makes 89 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The Ertiga has been positioned as a 7-seater MPV and it does have enough seats for seven, however the last row of seats lacks space. Now while the middle row of seats has maximum legroom of 96 cms the last row practically offers next to no legroom. Mahindra Xylo

Price: Rs.7.50 lakh to Rs.10.52 lakh

The Mahindra Xylo with its refreshed avatar does look a tad better than the older model and is also more features loaded.

The Xylo offers three different diesel engine options across variants. The D2 variant has a 2,489 cc, 4-cylinder motor that makes 95 bhp of power and 220 Nm of torque. The E4 and E8 variants have a 2,498 cc motor that makes 112 bhp of power and 260 Nm torque. The E9 variant sports 2,179 cc motor than makes 120 bhp of power and 260 Nm of torque. The Xylo is a full fledged 7-seater with ample space even in the last row. All three seats offer good legroom and headroom. The only shortcoming of the Xylo from the family MPV point of view is the amount of body roll. It still has considerable amount of boy roll making it uncomfortable for long journeys despite the space it offers.

Toyota Innova

Price: Rs.9.34 lakh to Rs. 13.84 lakh

Fuel type: Petrol and Diesel

The Toyota Innova is one of the most popular MPVs in India and with the car like handling and comfort it offers that is no surprise.

The Innova is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol Innova is powered by a 1,998 cc motor that makes 131 bhp of power and 181 Nm of torque. The diesel Innova is powered by 2,494 cc motor that makes 101 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque.

Toyota Fortuner

Price: Rs.21.15 lakh to Rs.22.32 lakh

The Fortuner is another popular vehicle from Toyota and its large dimensions and traditional SUV like stance has given it a lot of fans. It is available online diesel and is powered by a 2,982 cc motor that puts out 169 bhp of power and 343 Nm of torque.

The last row of the Fortuner is not very spacious but its bench seat layout makes it comfortable for short trips. There isn’t adequate legroom for adults although small kids can sit comfortably. Also read: Top 3 most awaited upcoming SUVs

Chevrolet Captiva

Price: Rs.18.74 lakh to Rs.24.59 lakh

The new Chevrolet Captiva has no changes in terms of its interiors apart from the upholstery. There is good leg and headroom in all three rows of the Captiva. It is one of the few SUVs which offer a third row with acceptable legroom.

The Captiva is powered by a 1,991 cc motor that makes 149 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque. The only downside in terms of space with the Captiva is that the all black interiors of the Captiva give it a cramped feel. The older beige interiors gave it an airy feel but the new interiors just create the illusion of lesser space.

Nissan Evalia

Price: Rs.8.49 lakh to Rs.9.99 lakh

Fuel type: Petrol and Diesel

The Nissan Evalia MPV has a very van like design which may not go down well with private buyers however it is very spacious. If you have a large family and are looking for a comfortable and spacious MPV the Evalia gives you an unparalleled combination of space and comfort.

The Evalia has a 1,461 cc motor that makes 85 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. It is easy to drive and handles well too. The last row of seats in the Evalia is the most spacious of the lot and it is definitely a vehicle to go for if space is your primary need.
