With car thefts becoming rampant in most Indian cities, the security of cars has become a concern for many. Since it isn’t possible to monitor the vehicle at all times in person, most people opt for car safety systems in their cars.
However, it isn’t easy to decide on what type of security devices one should install in their vehicle. Here are the types of different security systems available in India, their features and prices.
First, it is essential to understand why there is a need for security systems and what scenarios they are useful in. Car security systems range from basic auto-lock and alarm systems to those which allow tracking of the vehicle via GPS and even engine immobilizers. The most popular car security system brands in India are Autocop, Xenos and Nippon. Other less expensive brands are also available with car accessory dealers but are best avoided unless you are on a strict budget.
Let’s take a look at the different types of gadgets that you can use to secure your vehicle.
Rs. 200 to Rs. 2,000
The most economical safety gadget owners employ are simple steering locks. All current cars come with a lockable steering irrespective of the make, model and size of the vehicle. However these locks can easily be broken by force. After-market steering locks can be purchased from as low as Rs. 200 to Rs. 2,000 depending on the quality of metal used and the type of lock.
Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 6,000
There are essentially two types of gear locks – the ‘U’ type and the Pin type. Both are equally effective in terms of security and price. These are a step above the steering locks in terms of safety as they cannot be easily removed. These can be bought both from the authorized dealer or aftermarket accessory shops. Prices range from as low as Rs. 2,400 to Rs. 6,000, depending on the make and model.
It is best to install a basic remote lock on your car as it prevents the doors from being opened by simply sticking a plastic ruler between the window glass and the door lining. A basic remote lock will allow you to lock/ unlock the car, and you can choose whether you want a beeping sound every time you do so. If you are willing to go a little higher up the price band, you will get features like engine immobilizers and power window controls. Top-end remote locks also allow you to start your car keylessly, these are safe as they cannot be tampered with unless one uses code grabbers unlikely to be found with car thieves in India.
Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 19,000
A car tracking device is a secondary safety system, and it comes in useful if your car unfortunately gets stolen. It can track the position of the car down to the exact street or even the location where the car is parked. Apart from basic vehicle security that is provided by remote locks, some of these tracking devices could also send a message (SMS) to a certain number of preset mobile numbers and some can even call a preset phone number to help locate the car. Popular brands include Micro VBB and Amsaki.
Some of these tracking devices not only allow vehicle tracking via SMS but also have some basic functions like keyless entry, locking or unlocking doors via SMS. These devices can be purchased in the price range of Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 19,000 depending on the brand, model and features. However there is usually the additional cost of availing the GPS service which can be anywhere between Rs. 20 to Rs. 150 per month.
Another thing which has to be noted is that all these devices require time to be installed, installation time for most devices in our list in between 2 hours to 5 hours. Installation charges too may apply depending on the dealer or shop where you get these devices installed from. Our suggestion: Always negotiate prices.
