Bajaj Chetak was the name that everyone trusted in the scooter industry some time back. Bajaj tried their hands on the automatic scooters but shut down the operations after getting lukewarm response from the market. Now that the scooter industry is booming, Bajaj will make a comeback with an iconic name.
What about it?
The Chetak moniker will resurface on an all-new scooter. The new scooter will have a good mashup between modern and retro design. According to the images that have surfaced online, the front-end of the scooter will get distinctive modern, new-age looks while the rear part of the scooter getting a sculpted section that will be similar to the retro scooter designs.
The resurrecting Chetak will be a contemporary scooter and will be built on the lines of Piaggio Vespa line-up. It will feature modern day suspensions, brake and engine while body will bring back the nostalgic memories of “Humara Bajaj”. According to the image, the scooter will feature drum brakes but the final product may feature disc brakes if Bajaj really wants take on the brands like Vespa.
There is absolutely silence on the engine of the new scooter. To target the premium brand, Bajaj may come up with a 125cc, air-cooled engine. We may also see the engine incorporating the DTS-i, dual spark technology. The transmission will be CVT, unlike the Chetak that features a manual, hand-operated transmission unit.
When is it coming?
Bajaj is said to be at an advanced development stage of the scooter and the new Chetak may come up in the market in the first quarter of 2017 itself. Bajaj has always been a price conscious manufacturer and the new scooter will be priced very competitively to take on the rivals, especially Honda Activa, which has become the most selling two-wheeler in India.
