Snapshot: Honda is said to be working on a compact SUV based on the Brio. This SUV is likely to hit the Indian car market post 2015.
The Brio low cost car platform already hosts three cars: Brio hatchback, Amaze compact sedan and Mobilio MPV. A fourth car could be added to this platform in the coming years with rumours suggesting that the Brio platform will play host to a compact SUV. Although Japanese car maker Honda showcased the Vezel crossover at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, the crossover will not make it to Indian shores due to pricing and localization concerns.
Instead, Honda Cars India is said to be considering the Brio based compact SUV specifically with the Indian car market in mind. The compact SUV could be launched in India after 2015, a good two years from now. Being based on the Brio platform, expect the compact SUV to feature a large amount of common parts and a value price tag, a common thread that runs across all cars based on this platform.
Moving on, engine and transmission options are likely to be shared, with the 1.2 liter i-VTEC petrol and 2.5 liter i-DTEC turbo diesel engines to do duty on the new Honda compact SUV. Transmission options could include 5 speed manual and automatic gearboxes. A wheelbase similar to that of the Amaze, along with Honda’s man-maximum-machine-minimum design philosophy on the inside could liberate enough space for 5 adults.
On the whole, an SUV with a compact footprint, similar to that of the Brio and the Amaze, with better ground clearance and a high seating position is what may be expected. In India, the Brio based compact SUV will rub shoulders with the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra S101 and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha, whose production version will debut in 2015.
