Chevrolet has just launched the Enjoy multi-purpose vehicle in eight variants, four petrol and four diesel at a price point that undercuts its main competitor the Maruti Ertiga quite comprehensively. Will the pricing alone make it a winner, or does the Maruti Ertiga still have the power to stay ahead of the Chevrolet Enjoy?

Looks and styling: Ertiga has an edge
Let’s face it, MPVs are not really stunning lookers given that their form factor has to stay on the boxy side to free up space. But when you look at the Chevrolet Enjoy and the Maruti Ertiga from straight up front, the Ertiga has an edge, as it looks very car-like compared to the van-like looks on the Enjoy. In profile again, the lower body and sleeker styling of the Ertiga wins over the boxier and taller Enjoy. At the rear, neither are really good looking, but the Ertiga has a few more curves to it, while the Enjoy is typically van-like – and would probably fare better if placed next to a Nissan Evalia. Space and comfort: Enjoy wins hands down
However, all that boxy styling gives the Chevrolet Enjoy an edge. It is hugely spacious when compared with the Maruti Ertiga (which is based on the Maruti Ritz/Swift platform). There is ample headroom, shoulder-room and most of all legroom in all three rows. The Enjoy has individual bucket seats with armrests in the second-row as well (except the base variant), which are much more comfortable. The third row can easily seat three, while in the Ertiga the last row is rather cramped for two.
With all rows in place neither vehicle has particularly great boot space. The Enjoy can stash 190 litres of luggage while the Ertiga can hold about 135 litres (about two or three lap-top bags). Folding the last row seat flat unleashes 630 litres of space in the Enjoy, while the Ertiga’s boot space goes up to 480 litres. And here’s a catch. If you fold the last row, the Enjoy becomes a four seater, while the Ertiga remains a five seater!

Power and performance: Ertiga and Enjoy almost even
When it comes to engine choices, the Chevrolet Enjoy has an edge among the petrol choices, while the Maruti Ertiga is a better bet if you want more power from your diesel engine. The Chevrolet Enjoy petrol is powered by a 1.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 102 bhp of power at 6000 rpm and 131 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm with a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The Maruti Ertiga petrol also has a 1.4 litre petrol engine putting out 94 bhp of power and 130 Nm of torque with a five-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels.
The diesel engine in the Chevrolet Enjoy and the Maruti Ertiga are closely related – both derived from the Fiat multijet diesel. The Chevrolet Enjoy has a 1.3 litre four-cylinder diesel putting out 77 bhp of power at 4000 rpm and 188 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm, with a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels (the first time this engine is being used in a rear-wheel drive layout). The Maruti Ertiga has a 1.3 litre diesel engine with a variable geometry turbo building power up to 89 bhp @ 4000 rpm, and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm.
Given that the Chevrolet Enjoy is slightly heavier, it has a slight disadvantage. However, the diesel Enjoy has less turbo-lag compared to the Maruti Ertiga, which means less frequent gear shifts are needed in city conditions. Out on the highway, the Ertiga will be better. Features: Enjoy and Ertiga evenly matched
The Maruti Ertiga and the Chevrolet Enjoy are almost evenly matched on features. The top-end Enjoy and Ertiga have two airbags and ABS, music system, power mirrors etc. However, the Enjoy does not have steering audio controls. The Ertiga offers a roof mounted AC only in the top-end and mid variant, while the Enjoy offers it across all variants. Rear wiper and defogger too is available in the mid variant Enjoy, but only on the top-end Ertiga. The mid-variant diesel Ertiga has ABS, while the mid-variant Enjoy does not.
In terms of features, the Enjoy is better than the Ertiga is some areas, while the Ertiga is better in some.
Value for money: Chevrolet Enjoy
If you compared the ex-showroom prices of the Chevrolet Enjoy with the Maruti Ertiga, the Chevrolet Enjoy is nearly Rs. 50,000 cheaper on the base variant and Rs. 70,000 cheaper when you compare the top-end variants. Since it also has a very slight edge in features such as roof AC in all variants, and rear wiper, fog lamps in the mid variant, as well as more space, the Chevrolet Enjoy is therefore more value for money than the Maruti Ertiga.
