Ford to launch a next-gen Figo based MPV by 2016

Ford first tasted success in the Indian market with the Figo hatchback but the same was dampened by the failure of the next generation Fiesta. The company then launched the EcoSport compact crossover in the country and has been making merry ever since. The American car maker recently showcased a compact sedan based on the Ford Ka platform that will spawn the next generation Figo next year. The car maker wants to make the most of this platform and is therefore considering an MPV on this very platform by 2016.

In India, The American car manufacturer does not have a strong portfolio barring the Figo and EcoSport and it wants a bigger share of the growing pie here. It has a Fiesta classic that is priced at par with the compact sedans of the competition but the same has not been able to bring in the desired volumes for the company. The MPV will be aimed squarely at emerging markets such as India and Brazil, and will rival the likes of the Maruti Ertiga, Honda Mobilio and the Chevrolet Enjoy. Ford is likely to give its new MPV a contemporary design to appeal to the younger generation.

The initial report surrounding this MPV indicates that it will use the the same engine options as the new Fiesta (1.5 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel) sedan with the 1.0 liter EcoBoost turbo petrol engine also expected to make its way into its engine bay. Since the MPV is still two years away from launch in India, players like the Maruti Ertiga and the Honda Mobilio won’t have much to worry for the next couple of years. Along with Ford, Hyundai is another car maker that is readying up a compact SUV. The Hyundai MPV is also expected to arrive during 2015-16.
