Honda City – Readily available

With its revised pricing the Honda City has seen a massive jump in sales and has regained the No.1 spot in the under Rs. 10 lakh petrol sedan segment. The Honda City is available off-the-shelf (no waiting period) across India. The Honda City is priced in the range of Rs.7.49 – 9.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Honda City is known for its spot-on ergonomics, engine refinement, easy drivability and spacious interiors. The City comes with ABS and airbags as standard safety features across all variants, which the Verna lacks in its base variants. Rear seat legroom too is evenly matched in both cars, though the City’s back seat feels a little more supportive. With regard to features, City does not offer a rear view camera, parking sensors, side airbags, Bluetooth etc, but, if these features are not in your priority list, there is no reason not to buy the Honda City. Maruti SX4 petrol – Readily available

Price: Rs. 7 – 8.41 lakh

Maruti Suzuki SX4 has been in the market since 2007 and the demand has been quite consistent. The SX4 is available off-the-shelf (no waiting period) across India. The SX4 is priced in the range of Rs. 7 – 8.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The SX4 is known for its high ground clearance, muscular crease lines, commanding road view and contemporary equipments like the Verna.

Both the top-end variants of the SX4 get leather upholstery, alloy wheels, steering mounted audio controls, electric door mirrors, front and rear fog lamps, front airbags, AC with climate control, central locking and keyless entry. The Maruti Suzuki SX4 has a slight edge over the Verna when it comes to maintenance costs and consistent resale value (due to Maruti Suzuki badge).

Ford Fiesta petrol – Four to Six weeks

Price: Rs. 8.32 – 9.42 lakh

The new Ford Fiesta co-exists with the Fiesta Classic. The new Fiesta petrol has an average waiting period of one month and the waiting period may vary slightly depending on the color and variants you choose. The Fiesta is priced in the range of Rs. 8.32 – 9.42 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Fiesta is loaded with the voice-activated control system allowing the driver to change climate controls settings, make and receive calls and control the music just by using his voice. The “pull-drift compensation” technology, cruise control and intuitive ‘mobile-phone’ inspired centre console and the six-speaker audio system makes the Fiesta have a slight edge over the fluidic Verna.

Volkswagen’s Polo based sedan, the Vento has been selling in consistent numbers in the past several months. The Vento petrol is readily available off-the-shelf (no waiting period) and there may exist a minimal waiting period (say two weeks) for certain colors and variants. The Vent is priced in the range of Rs. 6.99 – 9.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

When comparing the features of Verna vis-à-vis Vento, the Verna leads. However, the Vento does have a slight edge in terms of rear-seat comfort thanks to the space, rear AC vent and a lever for the rear passenger to adjust legroom.

Maintenance costs for the Vento are slightly on the higher side, but otherwise, it will offer you a solid ride quality, decent handling, great built quality and top-notch fit and finish (as expected from a German car).
