India’s own auto giant Mahindra and Mahindra is said to be all geared up to foray into the two wheeler space.

Industry news sources said that the Mumbai-based automaker has appointed an independent team to explore options to make its presence felt in the 7.2-million strong two-wheeler market in India. As per the company’s discussions, the new team will look at research and development (R&D) activities as well as sales and marketing before it takes the plunge.

The team would weigh all options in the two wheeler business and it has been reported that the operations of the two-wheeler business will function independently like the company's venture with French carmaker Renault and the truck venture with the International Truck Engine Corporation (ITEC) of the US. A report pointed out that the Mahindras have set up a separate team that will oversee the two-wheeler business and there is going to be no confusion whatsoever between the various segments within the automotive group. It has been rumoured that the company has already tested two Chinese origin bikes. While one of them is an entry level 100cc bike, the other is a premium 150-175cc cruiser, the report added.

Meanwhile, the company’s desire race to takeover Kinetic Motors also may be seen in the context of its impending foray into the bikes segment. If the buy happens, the company would be lucky to have ready made infrastructure to build its own two wheelers.

The company’s thrust and presence in the rural markets would further help it to be a force to reckon with when it rolls out its motor cycles. The Mahindra brand is one name engraved in the hearts of people in every nook and corner of the country. The company would be looking to capitalize on that popularity factor when the two wheelers are made.
