Mahindra to build 3 new MPVs including Ertiga rival and redesigned Xylo

Snapshot: Mahindra & Mahindra is India’s dominant force when it comes to SUVs, with the Indian tractor and utility vehicle major having a presence in every SUV segment up to 25 lakh rupees. In the people mover space too, Mahindra has managed to corner a lion’s share of the market with the Bolero MUV, a best seller for years.

However, Mahindra hasn’t managed to make a big impact in the MPV segment, which continues to be dominated by the Toyota Innova. Mahindra’s Xylo MPV can be described as an also ran at best. To change this, Mahindra has 3 MPVs lined up for the Indian car market, and this line up includes a redesigned Xylo.

The Ssangyong X100 platform, which will form a basis for a new range of compact crossovers from Mahindra & Mahindra, dubbed the S101 and S102 models, will also play host to the new crop of monocoque bodied MPVs that Mahindra is aiming to inject into the Indian car market post 2015.

One MPV will be spawned out of the X100 platform that Mahindra is jointly working on, along with Ssangyong. The X100 platform based MPV will form the basis of Mahindra’s challenge to the dominant Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the upcoming Honda Mobilio MPVs. Expect petrol and turbo diesel engines to be offered on the new X100 based Mahindra MPV.

The Xylo’s design doesn’t turn heads and when it does, it involves more derision than appreciation. Mahindra is planning to adopt a new design language for its future range of MPVs and the body-on-ladder Xylo is likely to benefit from this new approach. According to Dr Pawan Goenka, the redesigned Xylo will adopt a more “flamboyant design”.

The third MPV from Mahindra will be based on the XUV500’s W201 platform, the utility vehicle giant’s first monocoque platform. The W201 platform based MPV is expected to lead Mahindra’s charge at the best selling Toyota Innova. The redesigned Xylo could be relegated to being sandwiched between the X100 and the W201 based MPVs.

While the X100 and W201 platforms based MPVs will be aimed at a more sophisticated set of buyers looking at a people mover that drives like a car, the redesigned Xylo could continue being a rugged people mover that is more luxurious than say a Bolero MUV. On the whole, Mahindra & Mahindra has a lot to offer in the utility vehicle space over the next half a decade.
