Maruti Suzuki is preparing for a car launch blitzkreig that encompasses various high growth sectors of the Indian market. Coming on the heels of the YRA premium hatchback’s import into India, the country’s leading automaker has kickstarted the testing program of the YBA code-named sub-4 meter compact SUV.
The YBA will have design cues from both the Suzuki iV4 and the Maruti XA Alpha compact SUVs. However, the base of the YBA is expected to be more of the XA Alpha, which has been shown at multiple Auto Expos, as Maruti Suzuki’s first compact SUV offering. A 2016 launch is in the offing, for the Maruti badged compact SUV.
While the engine and transmission details of the Maruti YBA are under close wraps, the sub-4 meter positioning of the compact SUV suggests that the petrol engine capacity would be capped to 1.2 liters while that of the diesel engine will be capped to 1.5 liters. These engine displacement caps are vital for Maruti Suzuki to qualify for excise duty gains conferred upon sub-4 meter cars.
The 1.2 liter K-Series motor that is a staple of many of Maruti Suzuki’s hatchbacks, and the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine – which is the mainstay of Maruti’s diesel fleet – are the two motors that could make it to the YBA compact SUV. An all-new motor from Suzuki’s new crop of under-development small capacity diesel engines could eventually make it to the YBA.
Suzuki is said to be also working on a new, 1 liter turbo petrol engine with a 3 cylinder layout. On whether this motor will make it to the YBA remains a point of conjecture at this moment. However, considering the fact that one of the YBA’s key competitors, the EcoSport, comes with a similar engine, turbo petrol power for the YBA is a high likelihood.
The Maruti Suzuki YBA code-named compact SUV is expected to rub shoulders with the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the upcoming Mahindra U301 ladder framed SUV in terms of price and positioning. The YBA will be Maruti Suzuki’s big volumes bet in India’s rapidly growing compact SUV segment.
