I was told by a salesman in a maruti dealership that the airbags do not deploy in a crash situation if we are not wearing seatbelts. Is that true?

The airbag should deploy whether you are wearing your seat belt or not.The purpose of the air bag is to deploy upon impact. The safety belt has the puropse of restraining the driver and passenger in the event of a collision. But the air bag does not deploy based on the belt.

Ok. I’m alarmed by the kind of claims/statements these maruti salesmen make to the customers!

Yea, airbags should deploy anyway. But effectiveness will be a lot less as you will be thrown forward into the airbag in a crash and is likely to injure yourself. Otherwise the seatbelts will keep you in place while the airbag deploys.

Gourish, Sales men are the last people you should trust while making a decision. If they want to push their stock they will say anything to do that.

Not sure of Maruti, but there are modern cars, which behave this way. Seatbelt indicates the car, that someone is actually sitting on the seat, who needs to be protected during a crash. It tells the car that, the weight on the car seat, is actually a person and not dead-weight (like luggage or books etc).

Help me decide.... I don't think I will be able to drive daily to office, with the kind of traffic prevailing now in Bangalore. So, the only proper use of the vehicle will be in the weekends. During the weekends, our parents might travel to stay with us, hence I would prefer to have a 5+ seater. But, I am not so keen on the 5+ seater, since they will not travel every weekend to stay with us, it m -- more --

Ecosport will not have a 7 seat option so thats a call you’l have to take. The Ertiga is purpose built for exactly your kind of 5+2 usage, without the girth and bulk of the regular UVs. I dont think you will have the running to justify the premium for diesel. Plus, that 90hp DDiS has quite a bit of lag and is not that great to drive in the city. A…[Read more]

Hmmm… Thanks for this –> “boot space that the Ertiga has will be consumed by the gas tank”. I hadn’t thought of this. How to know more on this?

The Ertiga’s boot is good enough for a couple of small suitcases and bags. It dont think it can accommodate a 14kg gas tank but a 12kg tank will surely fit. Which means you can at best place a small soft bag or two on top of the tank. For your regular luggage, you will have to invest in a roof mounted luggage carrier, which will set you back by 7-10k.

Ertiga is a complete Value for money car.. Since you would be retaining the car for many years to come it makes sense.. Maruthi parts and servicing is better compared to other competitors. Ertiga diesel is a better bet!

Perfectly OK for the first time buyer. I have always believed that diesels are easier to drive than petrols in traffic thanks to the better torque and the progressive clutch action.

Yea, no problem nowadays. Long back people used to be worried as diesels were thought to be unsophisticated and maintenance-heavy, but they are as good as petrol engines now. Nothing to worry.

Yes Juwin, present day diesel cars are just as good as their petrol counter parts, at least in the sense you are looking at them. They are cheaper to run, although the initial investment is around a lakh more than the equivalent petrol model. If you drive a lot lot then it makes sense to go for a diesel.

Sure, why not. As mentioned earlier, modern diesels are efficient, reliable, less noisy, have lighter clutch action and are cheaper to run than their petrol counterparts and older diesel engines. Go for one and post about the options you have in mind so that we can assist you in choosing a good option.

Diesel cars are much better to drive, it requires less operation with clutch while driving in traffic. More over diesel car is more powerful and fuel efficient in layman term. Some people complains about engine noise but I think its negligible. In recent time, diesel engines are much more improved with common rail fuel system. Scheduled servicing…[Read more]

Can Fiat’s Blue & Me be explored and written about on the website? It is also from Microsoft and a much more mature and feature rich utility. Most people seem to know about Ford Sync due to the advertising, it has an apples to apples comparison with Blue & Me. It will be a nice comparison from a technology perspective. Regards.

Yes, I think a Blue & Me vs Sync would be a nice comparison of two similar Bluetooth / voice-enabled systems both built by Microsoft for different manufacturers. Will do that.

Ford should have given the option to customize the number, to the customer. The software could have been made to call the name “Emergency”, in the phonebook, rather than hardcoding to always call 108. Thus, each customer, could have customized the number assigned in phonebook.
