Mercedes Benz has imported the Audi A3 sedan’s competitor, the CLA sedan, into India. The CLA 200 Petrol and 200 CDI Diesel will be the two models of the car that Mercedes Benz India has imported for homologation purposes. Both variants will go on sale in India by early 2015. The CLA sedan will join the recently launched GLA crossover, on Mercedes Benz India’s assembly line at Chakan, off Pune. Both cars will be imported into the country in the form of completely knocked down (CKD) kits, for assembly at Chakan. The Mercedes Benz CLA is likely to be pricier than the Audi A3 sedan.
The CLA 200 Petrol uses a 2 liter turbo petrol engine that outputs 181 Bhp-300 Nm while the CLA 200 CDI uses a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine with outputs of 134 Bhp-300 Nm. These engines are also seen powering the GLA crossover. Both engines will use a 7 speed, dual clutch automatic transmission to power the front wheels of the car. Economy, Sport and Manual will be the three modes that the CLA’s 7 speed automatic transmission will play host to. Based on the Modular Front Architecture (MFA), the CLA sedan shares parts with the likes of the A-Class, B-Class and GLA crossover.
In terms of safety equipment and features, the COMAND infotainment interface will occupy the center console of the car while safety features such as 7 airbags, ABS+EBD, hill start assist, ESP, traction control and anti-skid regulation will be offered as standard kit in the car. In terms of pricing, expect the CLA sedan to start at under 30 lakh rupees, pushing the upcoming W205 C-Class sedan up the price spectrum. The CLA will be Mercedes Benz’s entry-level sedan for India, vying for younger buyers’ attention at attractive price points.
