Most folks buying a luxury SUV buy one for the luxury and the imposing street presence that such an automobile offers. High speeds are mostly the preserve of high performance sedans and hatchbacks. Well, it is mostly true unless your surname is a GL 63 AMG. Mercedes Benz has continued it car launch onslaught in India and the latest high performance Merc for one of the fast growing luxury car markets in the world is the GL63 AMG SUV. The SUV has been launched at a price of 1.66 crore rupees, ex-showroom India. Bookings are already open and deliveries of the SUV will begin shortly.
Brought in as a completely built unit (CBU), the GL63 AMG SUV’s competition comes from the Porsche Cayenne and the Range Rover Sport. The GL63 AMG is a seven seater and is one of the largest SUVs in the luxury segment. Though the GL63 AMG weighs a portly 2,580 kilograms, the SUV’s twin turbo V8 petrol engine makes short work of this weight. The SUV is powered by a 5.5 liter twin turbo V8 petrol motor that outputs 557 Bhp of peak power and 760 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox that drives all four wheels by means of a 4MATIC all wheel drive system.
The SUV hurtles to 100 Kph from standstill in 4.9 seconds while top speed is an electronically limited – for sanity and safety – 250 Kph. With this much performance on tap, the GL63 AMG needs an array of safety systems to keep the SUV and its occupants safe. AMG Ride Control sports suspension and Active Curve System roll stabilisation are two features that keep the GL63 AMG stable yet sporty. High performance AMG steering and braking are standard on the SUV, along with 21 inch alloy wheels riding on 295 section tyres. The GL63 AMG gets a 100 liter fuel tank and a fuel efficiency of a little over 8 Kmpl. Start-stop and brake energy regeneration systems are standard.
