Mitsubishi may launch the Pajero Sport in February!

Mitsubishi will likely launch the “Pajero Sport” in India in February 2012. The upcoming Pajero will likely be assembled locally in order to keep its price under check.  The CKD (completely knocked down) parts for the Pajero will likely be imported from Thailand. The new Pajero will compete with entry-level premium SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Looks, space and comfort

The Pajero Sport looks bolder and quite contemporary when compared to the outgoing model. The front grille has unique vertical slits which make the SUV look brawny and aggressive. Complimenting with its aggressive design are the front and rear skid plates, high ground clearance (215 mm) and large, well pronounced wheel arches. The taillamp cluster represents the typical Mitsubishi design language.

Dimensionally, the Pajero Sport is as big as the Fortuner particularly in length, height and wheelbase. The Pajero Sport will have seven seats laid out in 2+3+2 arrangement. We expect the Pajero to be as spacious as the Toyota Fortuner if not more.

Expected Performance

Mitsubishi may likely use a 2.5-litre diesel motor that puts out 134 bhp of power and a more powerful 3.2-litre diesel engine that puts out 163 bhp of power for the Pajero Sport. The 3.2-litre engine can help accelerate the Pajero from 0 – 100 kmph in 12.8 seconds and it can achieve a top speed of 177 kmph. The base variant of the upcoming Pajero may have the 2.5-litre diesel motor while the top-end variant may be powered by the 3.2-litre motor.

Expected Price

The Pajero Sport is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 20 lakh – Rs. 25 lakh. The segment leader, Toyota Fortuner is offered in the Rs. 20 lakh – 21 lakh range and hence, if Mitsubishi prices the Pajero closer to the Fortuner (below Rs. 22 lakh) it has more chances of surviving the competition.

Summary

Mitsubishi SUVs are known for their off-roading abilities and rock solid reliability. The current Pajero is an old working horse but fails when it comes to design due to its boxy exterior and dull interiors. The Pajero Sport not only looks promising, but could also deliver in terms of performance and comfort. Will it be a threat to the mighty Fortuner? Share your views!
