Question of the day: Which is the best diesel small car in terms of mileage and maintenance

Ashish Mutereja asked the community which diesel hatchback he should go for, his key concerns are fuel economy and low maintenance cost. What car would you suggest for him?

question of the day

He is considering the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Maruti Suzuki Ritz. However, as some members pointed out, the Swift has a waiting period of around 3-6 months so the Ritz which is also a good option and is available almost off the shelf makes more sense. Moreover maintenance of these two cars like all Maruti products will be very low and affordable.

The Swift and Ritz return 23 kmpl and 21 kmpl respectively which are both good numbers. Ashish also wanted to know if the Hyundai i20 or Volkswagen Polo would suit his needs.

Now while the Swift and Ritz diesel start at Rs. 5.17 lakh and Rs. 4.84 lakh respectively, the Hyundai i20 costs Rs. 5.79 and Ashish will have to stretch his budget a bit. Similarly the Volkswagen Polo starts at Rs. Rs. 5.60 lakh, but if Ashish can afford to stretch his budget by more than Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000 he will get a better car. The Polo will however cost more in terms of maintenance than the Swift or Ritz.

The i20 has a claimed mileage of 22 kmpl while the folks at Volkswagen claim the Polo returns 22 kmpl as well. Assuming his budget is flexible the Nissan Micra Diesel XV which costs Rs. 5.72 and returns 23 kmpl is also one of his options.

If space is not an issue, he may also consider the Chevrolet Beat LT TCDI Option which returns 24 kmpl and costs Rs. 5.46 lakh. What car do you think Ashish should go for? Share your views!
