Please be clear as what you mean by 'better steering'?
I think what Sudhi means to ask is, that the steering in the Gen 1 Wagon R was light, but not as light as the new i20. Sudhi, not really - the i20 has a light steering alright, but not something that's a deal breaker. Yes, it lacks the precise feel as say the Swift or Figo, but is fine in city traffic.
apologies for not being clear. Roshun, your assumption is correct. my usage will be around 1500kms a month and 40% of which is on highway (of course i will be driving on high speeds - 130's). I am concerned with the lighter steering and suspension at high speeds.
swift may be a good option but there are sooooo many on road. and it lacks luggage space.
even in city FE is important for me. I am open for other suggestions. please help me out. thanks
How about the Dzire? You get good mileage, boot, and fuel efficiency too. No problem with steering either. Figo diesel? Good driver's car, no problem with steering etc.
Dzire seems to be good. a practical car. the problem with me is I am a gadget freak and i20 is pulling me strongly because of its gadgets. at the same time mileage and stability are also very important for me. felt dzire is that powerful, so thought about Ertiga for a while, but its way out of my budget (even VDI). whats your take on Manza?
Manza owners have told us the car is great. It is extremely value for money, too. But remember, the car is not meant to be driven at 130 kmph. It can do it, but 99 % of Manza owners would not try it, and Tata would have developed the car considering the vast majority. So then it doesn't sound like a good idea does it... I could suggest the Etios to you, but Etios is too basic, you won't like it. Ford Fiesta Classic does the job very well, but might be too expensive for you. Fiat Punto does a good job - is that in your budget? If it is, then you should look at the diesel versions of Skoda Fabia and Polo too.
As far as gadgetry goes and good driving feel, suspension and high speed handling, the Punto diesel Dynamic is also a car you should look at. However, please do test drive the i20 too before you make a choice. You may like it.
i did take i20 test drive (in city conditions) and liked it very much. getting to know that highway characteristics is getting difficult as the hyundai dealership is saying they dont have time for that. Punto is one car i am always loved but again all the reviews says, i20 has better mileage than punto 90 hp version .
Apologies for asking lot of questions. It is a big investment for me and it will be difficult for me if something goes wrong.
Sudhi, everyone here is more than happy to answer your questions :) We know how important this decision is for you. That said if you are a gadget freak the i20 is full of features ad has almost o compariso. Its steering too may not be as interactive as say the Swift but that is by no means a sore point for it. It drives really well both on highways and in the city. Unless you are very finicky about the steering and genuinely want to feel more connected to the road, the i20 is a good choice :)
Sudhi, since you say its a big investment, I would strongly recommend the Maruti Suzuki Dzire which is the safest buy. You can't go wrong in buying a car that the masses love, as it sells in excess of 15,000 units since the launch of new Dzire in Feb 2012. Mileage is superb, maintenance costs will be low and resale value will be good.

Manza diesel? It's a good bet. Tata is trying to push sales of the Manza. It's a solidly built, spacious car, but somehow doesn't feel great to drive. But that's a personal opinion. Test one and see. A Rs. 70,000 discount is hard to argue with.
yes on Diesel. and i got a feeling, i can bargain for 10 more k. my cousin has one and i drove it. drive was okay till i reach 100-110, post that, i felt the engine is struggling to pull. but the real time FE was showing as 25. not sure how true it was...
You will get close to that 25 kmpl figure if you manage to drive steadily at that speed, but thats a bit difficult right? It is just telling you that you are driving in a very optimal manner. In practice, you cant keep it up and the economy would drop. But still not too badly I am sure. If it says 25, you will get approx 22-23 on highway if you drive exactly like that without sudden acceleration or gear changes or braking. Not bad at all!
It's tough to get those figures in real world conditions. For a small stretch the instant consumption display will show you such brilliant mileage figures. That said, the 90 bhp 1.3 litre Manza diesel can give up to 19-20 kmpl on the highway. But in city - 13-14 kmpl is more like it. (Same engine as Linea diesel / SX4 diesel)
