The Baleno is one car that can be modified quite well. Yes, you can put a free-flow exhaust, and high-flow filter for some boost in performance. More ideas here: http://www.cartoq.com/performance-modifications-for-your-car-for-under-rs-50000/
You can read more about free flow exhausts, air filters etc in this story: http://www.cartoq.com/how-to-tune-your-petrol-car-for-more-performance/ It’ll help you get a better idea about what all you need to change as a free flow exhaust on its own won’t give you the effect you want it to
there is much more you can do in modifications- from spark plug, wire, synthetic oil and even alloy wheels can be added.
I had a project in mind for the Baleno which couldn't materialize but during that time I realized that the stock G16B unit in the Baleno has ample potential. If you intend to still use this car as your daily drive then do simple modifications which won't hamper reliability and practicality of the car. Following are a few suggestions:
1. A free flow exhaust makes a world of difference to this G16 and you then start to see the real potential of the 91 ponies that this car has. Go for a complete exhaust system with headers tuned for mid-range performance. Remove the cat-con (a little taxing on the environment but a lot of fun).
2. Install a K n N performance filter (conical type and not stock replacement), with this also get a cold air intake system routed in a way that the filter draws in cold air from the outside and none to minimal from the engine bay.
3. Get the engine de-carbonized, tuned and serviced, replace clutch if required, get the injectors cleaned.
4. Get Iridium plugs or Bosch 4-point plugs, if you can then also get an MSD Ignition system with NGK performance plug wires.
These are a sub-Stage 1 mod and will put a huge grin on your face when you drive the car, guaranteed.
Most importantly, modifications work best when the stock engine is in prime condition so before starting off ensure point 3 is carried out completely. Lastly, whenever you carry out any mod which will affect air-fuel mixture (like an intake and exhaust mod) then it is best to reset the ECU by simply disconnecting the battery and re-connecting it again after a few minutes. Drive around for 10-12Kms wherein the ECU will relearn and adopt the changes in intake air volume and fuel supply will be adjusted (during this time it is ok for the engine to behave oddly) and post that the ECU will then correct the fuel-air mapping and you will then be able to experience the mods in a better way.
