Strome has more power and torque but also happens to be heavier. Hardware-wise, both have shift on fly 4x4 systems with a low ratio transfer case, free-wheeling hubs and non lockable differentials. That the Storme is a lot less bouncy and also has better brakes give it the edge. But if you are looking for a hardcore off roader, neither makes the cut. In that case, wait for the upcoming Gurkha from Force Motors. It is desgined to shame tractors.
totally agree with u mr jain but one thing which i missed is the comfort level which might be missing in gurkha. i want the comfort of a suv + three to four off roading trips to locations like leh, sach pass or nathu la at the most. i would really appeciate your sincere and expert advice as i am totally confused with my options.
I own a Scorpio 4x4 CRDe (2006 model) and have done trips to the Ladakh region, Rajasthan - Jaisalmer, Mandwa etc, and I've been pretty happy with it. It's not a real hard-core offroader for the kind of usage you see on off-road events, but for normal off-road conditions it handles everything with ease. Never had any serious issues. However, one thing that would give the Storme an edge over the Scorpio is the limited-slip rear differential used in the Storme 4x4. Plus the overall comfort and space is better. I'd agree with Shreyans, that the Storme may be a slightly better choice for your purposes.
The Storme, if budget is not a constraint. The Scorpio makes its case as a very practical VFM, can't be beaten. The Gurkha though is awesome, is for hardcore off roading. So go in for the one that fits you the best.
I am not looking for a gurkha as i would not be going for hard core offroading . i would be doing some normal offroading as mr povaiah has mentioned in his reply..limited-slip rear differential used in the Storme 4x4 and comfort , are these two things which put storme over scorpio.
moreover budget is not a constraint for me till 15 lakh . another thing which would be the deciding factor would be the cost of ownership and resale value say after4 years.
In that case, I would say the Storme is better. The TCO in my opinion, will be less for the Scorpio since its relatively cheaper and the loss during resale is relatively lesser. But note that Mahindra is not good with electronics and the start stop system, the auto wipers, the auto lights etc are going to fail on and off. Its just a little irritating though Mahindra does take care of fixing it or replacing it. This is as per a colleague's experience over the past year for a top variant Scorpio. The Storme does not have any fancy electronics which may need help, its just got the basics right and definitely feels much better than a Scorpio inside as well as outside. So if you want the VFM option, its the Scorpio but if you don't mind some more money while buying as well as using it, the Storme is better. From what I gather about you, the Storme may be a better idea for you. Regards.
thanks amit , for the wonderful advice.
amit, i want one more suggestion from you. what could be the possible difference between xuv 500 awd and storme 4 by 4. and which one is better out of these two for normal offroading purpose
the differences i am looking for is only on normal offroading basis only between xuv 500 awd and storme 4 by 4
XUV - Monocoque which is primarily Front Wheel Drive. No low ratio transfer case. Storme - Ladder frame chassis which is old school and the better option between these two. Primarily Rear Wheel Drive and has a low ratio transfer case which is again the better option. Off roading capabilities are definitely better in the Storme, no two ways about it.
Hard Core Offroaders are generally not comfortable on the road specially on long trips, You will have to find a balance. Most people have a wrong notion about hardcore offroading. Most conditions could be tackled by 2wd with good ground clearance. Soft Sand or Mud generally requires Extreme offroaders. Probably most users would find getting stuck as extreme, which is not. I have never liked the ride quality of the XUV 500, and Ladakh trips as the experts rightly say, The lesser the electronics the better it is. Less chances of stupid failures. Personally I would prefer the TATA Storme for this kind of usage.
