I was told by a salesman in a maruti dealership that the airbags do not deploy in a crash situation if we are not wearing seatbelts. Is that true?

The airbag should deploy whether you are wearing your seat belt or not.The purpose of the air bag is to deploy upon impact. The safety belt has the puropse of restraining the driver and passenger in the event of a collision. But the air bag does not deploy based on the belt.
Ok. I'm alarmed by the kind of claims/statements these maruti salesmen make to the customers!
Yea, airbags should deploy anyway. But effectiveness will be a lot less as you will be thrown forward into the airbag in a crash and is likely to injure yourself. Otherwise the seatbelts will keep you in place while the airbag deploys.
Gourish, Sales men are the last people you should trust while making a decision. If they want to push their stock they will say anything to do that.
Not sure of Maruti, but there are modern cars, which behave this way. Seatbelt indicates the car, that someone is actually sitting on the seat, who needs to be protected during a crash. It tells the car that, the weight on the car seat, is actually a person and not dead-weight (like luggage or books etc).
