my brand new mahindra scorpio AT 4WD shudder violently after firing up in the cold morning. This goes away after 5-6 secs. But this doesn’t happen when the engine/weather is warm.
Is this normal, if not what could be wrong?
Thanks.
Hemant

Hemant, you need to start your car and let it idle for a while before you start driving. Due to the cold the engine takes longer to heat up and you should wait for that to happen before you drive off. You will be able to tell that the engine has reached the optimum temperature based on the sound and vibrations.
Thanks Rishabh, does this mean that these vibrations are normal?
It is not out of the ordinary to have starting trouble during winters, so if the vibration goes away once the engine heats up then yes it is normal and there is no need to worry. If the Vibrations persist even after the car has been running for a while then you should get it checked :D
I have a Scorpio too, and in cold weather it sounds really miserable. It shouldn't shudder too much as that's indicative of a loose or worn engine mount, but otherwise there is a bit of shudder. That's something you have to live with in winter. You'll need to idle it for a minute or so, to let it settle down before pressing the accelerator or driving off.
Mine is the CRDe variant, and in the cold, it automatically raises the engine rpm to 1100 rpm on start up, and then slowly drops it to 850 once it warms a bit. Only after the engine settles down, do I move off.
Engines also feel cold mate, specially diesel ones. They need time to heat up. That shudder is normal, and is a classic sign of a powerful engine coming to life after its short hibernation. Its all cool, and just let it ideal for about a minute, then pump the hell out of that engine. ;)
Hi, Hemant. How is your experience in city and highway with Scorpio AT. I am also planning to go for it but never got the TD by dealer in Delhi for past six months!
