The Hyundai Verna diesel comes in two engine variants a 1.6 litre diesel with a claimed fuel efficiency of 22.32 kmpl and a 1.4 litre diesel with a claimed fuel efficiency of 23.5 kmpl. However, users have been claiming that the real world mileage they have been getting from the Verna is no where near the claimed figures, especially in the city.

CarToq conducted a poll among its community members asking those who have driven or own a Hyundai Verna to give us the real world figures of the Verna diesel.

The results of the poll were surprising. A majority of over 40% of the 1,190 people who voted on the poll said that the car gave only between 14 kmpl and 16 kmpl in city traffic conditions. About 30% (355 votes) said the mileage was slightly higher at between 16 kmpl and 18 kmpl. The remaining 30% said the mileage of the car was between 18 kmpl and 20 kmpl. CarToq Poll

What is the real mileage of Hyundai Verna diesel

14-16 kmpl: 478 (40.16%)

16-18 kmpl: 355 (29.83%)

18-20 kmpl: 357 (30%)

Total votes: 1,190

So why this skew, with a majority claiming a lower mileage figure and only some claiming the higher figures? This could be attributed to the different “city” conditions. The Verna diesel – both engine choices – comes with a six-speed manual transmission (and two diesel variants also have a four-speed automatic, but sales aren’t that high for it). To get higher fuel-efficiency, the car needs to be driven in fifth and sixth gear for longer durations – something that’s not possible in crowded city traffic, where the average speed does not exceed 30 kmph. Using these higher gears requires the car to be travelling over 50 kmph, and that’s possible only in some cities. Also see: Hyundai Verna video review

The Verna is the highest selling car in the mid-size segment selling over 4,000 units a month consistently since its launch in May 2011. It comes in 13 variants (six petrol and seven diesel) with prices ranging between Rs. 7.13 lakh and Rs. 11.30 lakh. Hyundai recently added two more automatic variants to the line-up, a diesel 1.6 EX automatic (base 1.6 variant with automatic transmission) and a 1.6 petrol EX automatic, making that four automatic variants in the variant offerings. The Verna diesel automatic is incidentally the cheapest diesel automatic car available in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 10.12 lakh (Hyundai Verna 1.6 EX AT).
