The all-new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport luxury SUV has now been revealed, and is coming soon to India. The Pajero Sport is based on the new Triton pick up truck, much like how the new Fortuner is based on the 8th generation Hilux pick up truck. Since the Mitsubishi SUV shares its ladder frame chassis with the pick up truck, good performance off the road, durability and toughness are expected to be standard on the new sports utility vehicle.
What’s new in the 2015 Pajero Sport SUV?
For starters, it’s the design. The Pajero Sport’s exteriors are all-new, taking design cues from the GR-HEV concept. Mitsubishi’s designers have worked hard to differentiate the SUV from its Triton pick up truck sibling, and it really shows. The front and rear end styling of the new SUV is completely new.
Chrome embellished and with swept back headlamps, the new Pajero Sport looks sleeker while the rear is overstyled with tail lamps that would’ve looked better on a concept than a production model. In terms of the overall profile though, the 2015 Pajero Sport seems like an evolution of the current model than a total revolution.
Will I finally get to see modern interiors on the only Mitsubishi on sale in India?
The answer is, yes, the 2015 Pajero Sport features new interiors that look upmarket, and that are not overdone. Black is the overarching theme on the new dashboard layout, which has strategically placed bits finished in silver. Leather upholstery, a new center console, a touchscreen infotainment interface and a new steering wheel look premium.
What about features?
Mitsubishi has come out all guns blazing here, and the Pajero Sport is loaded to the gills with equipment. While we still don’t know if all of the new equipment would be offered on the India-spec version, here’s a round up of what the international-spec model features.
- 8 speed automatic gearbox
- A new four-wheel drive system with off-road mode and hill descent control
- ‘Multi-Around’ camera system
- Electric parking brake
- Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM)
- Blind Spot Warning system
- Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System
- SRS airbags
Will I get more power and torque? And what about mileage?
Downsizing has been the name of the game in the luxury SUV class. From the new Toyota Fortuner to the new Ford Endeavour, and now to the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, turbo diesel engines are being downsized. At the same time, engine designers are squeezing out more performance and fuel efficiency.
Like its competitors, the 2015 Pajero Sport will feature a smaller 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, but with higher outputs likely, in this case 180 Bhp and 430 Nm. The piece de resistance however, will be the 8 speed automatic gearbox, which is a class leading unit. The manual gearbox also gains a cog, and goes six speed.
Mitsubishi claims that the new Pajero Sport is 17 % more fuel efficient than the outgoing model, which means that the mileage conscious buyers will be pleased too.
So, when is it coming to India, and at what price?
Sometime in 2016 is our best guess even as Mitsubishi India is playing cards close to its chest. The CKD assembly route at Hindustan Motors’ Tiruvallur factory is the approach Mitsubishi is likely to take with the new Pajero Sport as well. Expect to pay a 10 % price premium for the new SUV if it’s laden with features like the international model. A starting price of about 27 lakh rupees is likely for the 7 seat luxury SUV.
