As the year draws to a close, and if you haven’t bought a car yet, hold on to your cheque-book for now. There are a whole host of new cars coming in 2013, and we aren’t talking of facelifts here, although there are a whole lot of face-lifted cars to also look forward to.

Here are some all-new cars to look forward to next year.

All-new hatchbacks

Volkswagen Cross Polo

Expected: End 2013

The Volkswagen Cross Polo is likely to be VW’s answer to the Mahindra Quanto, Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster, well, sort of. It is essentially a Polo that has been given a raised suspension, more cladding and much larger wheels, to make it look like a mini-SUV, but it remains a hatchback. What is interesting about the Volkswagen Cross Polo, is that it is likely to come with an all-new 1.5 litre diesel engine, that makes more power than the present 1.2 litre diesel, while still adhering to excise norms for vehicles under 4-meters in length. It will also likely come with a  1.2 litre turbo-charged petrol engine. Prices are likely to be around Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh.

Mercedes A-Class hatchback

Expected: Mid 2013

mercedes benz a class 2

This is likely to be the cheapest Mercedes Benz yet in India. It is likely to be priced at Rs. 18 lakh and will be a proper four-door super-premium hatchback, ideally suited for the city. It will have a 1.6 litre petrol engine that puts out about 120 bhp of power and also a 1.8 litre diesel engine in its line up. Both cars could be offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, making the Mercedes A-Class an ideal city runabout for the well-heeled.

The other hatchbacks expected in 2013 include a diesel Maruti Wagon-R and of course, a facelifted Hyundai i10 with a 1.1 litre diesel engine, expected in September 2013. The i10 will likely be longer and wider than the present i10. Also read: Upcoming diesel cars for India in 2013

The Honda Amaze is probably the most-awaited sedan for 2013. It is based on the Honda Brio platform and will be under 4-meters in length. It is expected to be quite spacious. What is the selling point of the Honda Amaze is that it will come with Honda’s first diesel engine for the Indian market – a 1.5 litre iDtec engine that puts out between 80 bhp – 90 bhp of power, and will likely have a fuel efficiency of as much as 24 kmpl. It will be priced between Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 7.5 lakh.

Mercedes A-Class sedan

Expected: End 2013

mercedes benz a class 1

The Mercedes A-Class sedan will be the cheapest Mercedes sedan in India, slotting in below the C-Class as well. Although it shares its platform with the A-Class hatchback that is coming in, it will likely be slightly roomier than the hatchback. It too will get the same engine line up from the hatchback – a 1.6 litre petrol and a 1.8 litre diesel engine.

Skoda Octavia

Expected: End 2013

The Skoda Octavia is set to make a comeback in India. It will probably replace the current Laura in the line up for Skoda, unless the company plans to sell both alongside, like it did with the earlier Octavia and the Laura for a while. The new Octavia will have design cues from the Mission L and is a good-looking car. The engines are likely to be the same 2-litre diesel engine and 1.8 litre turbo petrol. It may be priced between Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh, giving Skoda some room to slot in a couple of Laura variants below it.

All-new Maruti sedan

Expected: End 2013

Maruti is working on a new sedan that will slot in between the Maruti Dzire and the Maruti SX4, to effectively compete against cars like the upcoming Honda Amaze, and current cars in that segment. The car is likely to be larger than the Dzire – at over 4 metres in length and will come with a 1.4 litre petrol engine (same as the Maruti Ertiga petrol) and a 1.3 litre diesel engine (same as the SX4 diesel).

It is likely to be priced at about Rs. 22 lakh.

Maruti is fast-tracking the development of its new compact SUV, the XA Alpha. The vehicle isn’t under 4-metres in length, but is compact nevertheless. It is likely to borrow components from the Swift platform for its development and will come with a petrol and diesel engine. The petrol is likely to be a 1.4 litre K-Series petrol engine (like the Ertiga) and the diesel will be a 1.3 litre 90-bhp diesel (again shared with the Ertiga). Maruti is also likely to offer the XA Alpha with a 4×4 option. It will be priced between Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 9 lakh.

Besides these all-new SUVs, Honda will be launching its fourth generation CRV in India, which will be a slightly larger version of the current CRV, by January 2013. It will sport a higher price tag of about Rs. 27-28 lakh, but will still only come with a petrol engine. Hyundai too will bring in the facelifted Santa-Fe with fluidic styling in mid 2013. It will have more space in the third row and may also come with a smaller 2-litre diesel variant, besides the current 2.2 litre engine. The third rendition of a compact SUV is Nissan’s version of the Renault Duster. It will be a badge-engineered product with a facelifted front end and rear end, but identical mechanicals to the Duster.
