The year 2012 is expected to bring in new sedans particularly in the entry-level premium sedan segment. There are a couple of sedans in the C and D segments as well. Here’s a comprehensive list of sedans that you can expect this year.
Mahindra Verito facelift – June 2012
Looks: The upcoming Verito facelift will have a new radiator grille, a refreshed front bumper with a prominent chrome strip and new fog lamp housing. At the sides, the Verito facelift will have roof rails, blacked-out B-pillars and ORVMs with new mounts. The rear of the Verito facelift will get a redesigned boot door, revamped tail lamp clusters and the number plate integrated into the rear bumper.
Performance: The Verito facelift will likely have the same engines as the present model. Mahindra Verito is powered by a 1.5-litre dCI engine that churns out 65 Bhp of power and 160 Nm of torque. The Verito petrol is powered by 1.4-litre motor that puts out 75 Bhp of power and 110 Nm of torque.
Mileage: The Verito facelift will likely have the same mileage as the present model. The Verito diesel returns a mileage of 21.03 Kmpl and the Verito petrol returns a mileage of 13.87 Kmpl.
Variant and price details: The Verito facelift will likely come in the same trims, G2 and G4 for petrol version and D2, D4 and D6 for diesel version. The Verito facelift could be priced marginally higher than the present model owing to the cosmetic upgrades. At present, the Verito is priced in the range of Rs. 5.19 lakh – Rs. 6.94 lakh.
2012 Chevrolet Cruze – June 2012
Looks: The new Cruze will have a redesigned grille and refreshed fog lamps. The headlamps of the outgoing model make the Cruze looks aggressive and hence, the designers have not altered the overall shape of the headlamp on the facelift version. New alloy wheel pattern can also be seen in the upcoming Cruze facelift. Interiors-wise, expect improved headroom for rear passengers.
Performance: The upcoming Cruze will be powered by GM’s Z series, 2.0 litre, DOHC, common-rail diesel motor that produces 163 Bhp (presently it is 148 Bhp) of power. The new Cruze will have an edge of a wholesome 23 Bhp over the Jetta that belts out 140 Bhp of power and is one of its key competitors. Read more about the new Cruze here.
Mileage: The new Cruze may have a slightly lower mileage than the present model which has an ARAI-certified mileage of 17.30 Kmpl for the manual variant and 14.39 Kmpl for the automatic variant.
Variant and price details: Expect the 2012 Cruze to be offered in three variants namely the 2.0 LT, 2.0 LTZ MT and the 20. LTZ AT. The price of the new Cruze may be slightly more than the present model which is priced in the range of Rs. 12 – 14.44 lakh.
Toyota Camry – June 2012
Looks: Toyota unveiled the new Camry at the Delhi Auto Expo in January 2012. The facelift Toyota Camry takes design cues of Toyota’s premium brand, Lexus. The front grille of the upcoming Camry has six horizontal chrome slats giving the car a bold appearance. The sharp lines and a sporty rear profile give the new Camry a youthful appeal.
Performance: The new Camry is expected to be powered by a new 2.5-litre petrol (replacing the 2.4-litre petrol) engine. This motor will put out 167 Bhp of power and will perform slightly better than its predecessor. See more photos of the Toyota Camry here.
Mileage: Expect the upcoming Camry to have a mileage in the range of 8 – 13 Kmpl.
Variants and prices: There are expectations that Toyota may assemble the car locally via CKD (Completely knocked down) route. Hence, the price of the Camry could go down by a couple of lakhs and may start at as low as Rs. 20 lakh.
Hyundai Elantra: July 2012
Looks: Hyundai unveiled the Elantra at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. The upcoming Elantra adopts the popular ‘fluidic sculpture’ as seen in cars such as the i10, Verna and the Eon. We feel that the new Elantra will be a better looking model with its attractive curves.
Performance: In international market, the Elantra is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine that puts out 130 Bhp of power and a 1.8-litre diesel engine that churns out 148 Bhp of power. The engines are mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. We expect the same engines to power the India-bound Elantra.
Mileage: The Elantra will likely have a mileage of around 10 Kmpl – 15 Kmpl for both the petrol and the diesel versions.
Variants and prices: The Elantra is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 12 lakh – Rs. 15 lakh which is where most of its competitors are also priced such as the Honda Civic, the Chevrolet Cruze and the Skoda Laura.
Renault Scala: December 2012
Looks: The Scala is another rebadged vehicle and is essentially Renault’s version of the Nissan Sunny. We can expect a new front grille, bumper, modified headlamps and taillamps to differentiate it from the Sunny. The Scala will likely have more aggressive looks when compared to the Sunny.
Performance: The Scala diesel is expected to have the same engines that power the Sunny diesel. The Sunny diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre dCI motor that churns out 85 Bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. If Renault Scala petrol is launched, it would likely borrow the engine from the Sunny’s 1.5-litre petrol that puts out 98 Bhp of power.
Mileage: The ARAI-certified fuel economy of the Sunny diesel is 21.6 Kmpl. Since the Scala will likely have no mechanical changes, expect the Scala diesel to return the same mileage (21.6 Kmpl). The ARAI-certified mileage of the Sunny petrol is 16.95 Kmpl and hence the Scala petrol can also be expected to have same mileage.
Variants and Prices: The Renault Scala is expected to be priced marginally more than the Sunny and hence the Scala variants may be priced in the range of Rs. 6 lakh – Rs. 9 lakh.
Chevrolet Sail sedan: November 2012
Looks: The Sail comes with Chevrolet’s now familiar bowtie grille at the front and side swept headlamps. The side profile of the Sail has subtle lines starting from the middle of the front wheel fender going all the way to the tail lamp cluster. The rear of the car has a bland boot door but a stylish side swept tail lamp cluster that slightly resembles that of the Fiat Linea.
Performance: The Sail sedan is expected to be offered in both petrol and diesel versions similar to the hatchback. The engines too, will be the same as the hatchback version. The 1.2-litre petrol motor puts out 79.5 Bhp and 108 Nm of torque and mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The diesel version of the Sail sedan may get the 1.3-litre Multijet engine which was jointly developed by GM and Fiat. The diesel version will likely be the volume driver for Chevrolet in its segment because demand for diesel sedans is quite high.
Mileage: Expect the Sail petrol to return a mileage in the range of 11- 15 Kmpl while the diesel version may return a mileage in the range of 14 – 18 Kmpl.
Variants and Prices: The Sail sedan may come in three trims PS, LS and LT. High local components will help GM India to price the Sail competitively. We expect GM India to price the Chevrolet Sail sedan in the Rs. 5 lakh – 8 lakh price range.
