10 affordable cars BIG on power, launching soon in India: Mahindra XUV 700 to Honda Civic

Power is something that has never been on the priority list of customers while shortlisting cars. However, in recent times, a lot of powerful cars have started arriving in showrooms and the market is responding quite decently to them too. If power is something that is above fuel efficiency on your list then these are the cars that you should look forward to. Here are 10 affordable upcoming cars that will be big on power.

Mahindra S201 SWB

Expected launch: September/October 2018

This is a highly awaited car in the Indian market. The Mahindra S201 is based on the SsangYong Tivoli but it will wear a Mahindra badge in India because the SsangYong brand is not widely known in the Indian market. The S201 will be the sub 4-meter version of the car and will take on vehicles like Ford EcoSport, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon. The petrol version of the S201 will be the most powerful car in the segment.

The S201 will get monocoque chassis and will be powered by both petrol and diesel engine options. There will be a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will develop class-leading 140 Bhp while the diesel variants will be powered by a 1.5-litre engine that develops a maximum power of 125 Bhp. An AWD option is not expected in the S201 just like all its competitors.

Mahindra XUV 500

Launch date: 18th April 2018

Mahindra will soon launch the updated XUV 500 in the Indian market and it gets many exterior changes alongside a more powerful engine. The current flagship SUV of Mahindra will get a revamped front end and rear end. There is a new larger front grille with a mesh-inspired design. The rear of the vehicle now gets new tail lamps replacing the old Christmas tree styled lamps.

Mahindra will continue to power the new XUV 500 with the same 2.2-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 140 Bhp and 330 Nm. However, the top end version of the car will get a power output of 155 Bhp and 360 Nm. It will also get an automatic optional transmission.


Mahindra XUV 700

Launch date: End 2018

The Mahindra XUV 700 was unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo and it is a SsangYong Rexton G4 behind the Mahindra badge. It will be the flagship vehicle of Mahindra in India when launched. The seven-seater SUV gets a Mahindra grille and Mahindra logo on the body. It will take on the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour in the market.

The rebadged version of the G4 Rexton, the XUV 700 will be powered by a turbocharged diesel engine with 2.2-litre displacement. This engine has been developed with SsangYong and it generates a peak power of 178 Bhp – 420 Nm. It will get a 7-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The launch is expected to happen by the festive season.

Tata Tigor JTP

Expected launch: June/July 2018

Tata showcased the performance sedan, Tigor JTP, at the Auto Expo. The car has been developed with Jayem Auto and will be launched in the Indian market. The Tigor JTP will be the cheapest hot sedan available in India. It gets a lowered suspension, new air dams, air scoops on the bonnet, new smoked headlamps and a body kit. The body kit consists of a side-skirt and rear diffuser.

The car uses the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that goes into the Nexon but additional changes have been done to the intake and the exhaust system to improve performance. The power output is rated at 108 Bhp and 150 Nm and it gets a 5-speed manual transmission.

Tata Tiago JTP

Expected launch: June/July 2018

After the launch of a few hot hatches in the Indian market, Tata has planned to jump into the segment too. Tata will launch the cheapest hot hatchback in India. The car was unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo. It gets smoked headlamps, bonnet scoops, body kit and a rear diffuser to differentiate it from the regular version of the car.

Tata has also painted the ORVMs in a contrasting red colour and the roof in black colour to add a sporty look. Engine-wise, the car will be powered by the same 1.2-litre REVOTRON turbo petrol engine that powers the Nexon. It generates similar 108 Bhp and 150 Nm in the Tiago JTP same as the Tigor JTP.

Ford EcoSport S

Expected launch: September/October 2018

Ford EcoSport is the second best selling car in the segment. It is quite popular among enthusiasts because of its handling and driving dynamics. Ford recently launched the updated version of the EcoSport. Now a sportier version of the same will be launched soon. Similar to the Figo S and the Aspire S, it will be known as EcoSport S. It’ll be offered with petrol and diesel engines but the power will remain similar to the regular model. The petrol powered EcoSport is powered by a 121 Bhp – 150 Nm producing 1.5-litre petrol engine. The diesel engine produces a maximum of 99 Bhp – 205 Nm.

The car has been already seen in India and the launch is expected to happen sometime soon. The changes are expected to in the suspension department making the EcoSport S much sharper than the regular version. The steering is also expected to be sharper than the regular version of the current model. The exteriors will be more aggressive with blacked out parts and sportier alloy wheels.

Maruti Swift Sport

Expected launch: September/October 2018

Maruti launched the all-new Swift in the market earlier this year. Now it is time for the launch of the Swift Sport. This will be the first Swift Sport to come to the Indian market and is a much-awaited launch. The Swift Sport is already available in international markets.

The new Swift Sport will be powered by the 1.4-litre turbocharged Boosterjet engine that develops a maximum of 138 Bhp and 230 nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk

Expected launch: July/August 2018

Jeep has already showcased the Trailhawk in India at a private event. The hardcore off-road version of the Compass looks quite interesting with additional equipment like red tow-hooks on the bumpers, a new body vinyl and different alloys.

The Trailhawk version will be powered by the same 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine that powers the regular variant but it will get a 9-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces a similar power and torque, which is 171 Bhp – 350 nm. The Trailhawk will also get off-road friendly features like a 20:1 Low-ratio transfer case and various other modes.

Hyundai Creta

Expected launch: May 2018

Hyundai will launch the facelifted version of the Creta in India and the upcoming SUV has been already spied completely uncamouflaged during an ad shoot in India. It comes with a few changes on the outside like new grille, headlamps and new bumpers. Under the hood, the Creta will carry the same engine options.

Hyundai offers three engine options with the Creta in India. There is a 1.4-litre diesel engine accompanied by a 1.6-litre diesel and a 1.6-litre petrol. The 1.6-litre diesel engine produces a maximum of 126 Bhp – 260 Nm. The petrol 1.6-litre engine in the Creta produces a maximum of 121 Bhp – 151 Nm.

Honda Civic

Expected launch: End 2018

The Civic will be the big comeback car in the Indian market. The D-segment sedan has a big following in India and it is coming back in an all-new avatar. Honda announced that the Civic will be launched by the end of this year. It will be powered by two engine options.

The petrol-powered Civic will get a 1.8-litre engine that develops a maximum power of 139 Bhp and 175 Nm of peak torque. There will be a 1.6-litre diesel engine option too and it will churn out a maximum power of 118 Bhp and 300 Nm.
