Turbochargers have become a common part of modern diesel engines. The highly effective device uses the energy of flowing exhaust gases to induce air into the combustion chamber of an engine. The extra air helps in better combustion and makes the engine much more efficient.

With pollution emission norms becoming stringent, many manufacturers have started downsizing the petrol engines. However, to get the most out of a smaller engine, manufacturers have started using the turbocharger on petrol engines too. Here are ten such affordable turbocharged petrol cars available in the market.

Tata Nexon

Starts from Rs. 6.15 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi

The Tata Nexon is the most affordable petrol-turbocharged car that you can buy at the moment. Tata launched its first-ever sub-4-meter SUV in the market with a three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. The Nexon is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine that generates a maximum of 108 Bhp and 170 Nm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual and AMT transmission. The AMT transmission is available for the first time with a petrol engine in the segment.

Volkswagen Polo GT TSI

Priced at Rs. 9.33 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi

Volkswagen Polo GT TSI has been around for a long time now. It became the first affordable car to offer the 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. The Polo GT TSI is a hatchback for enthusiasts and comes powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It generates a maximum power of 104 Bhp and a peak torque of 175 Nm. It offers a maximum fuel efficiency of 17.21 km/l, which is decent for a performance-oriented car.

Maruti Baleno RS

Priced at Rs. 8.44 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi

The Baleno RS became Maruti’s first-ever turbocharged petrol hatchback in India. With the Baleno RS, Maruti also introduced the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine to the Indian market. The three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is available with many cars in international markets but, for the time being, it is only available with the Baleno RS in the Indian market. The hatchback gets a de-tuned version of the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that generates a maximum of 101 Bhp and a peak torque of 150 Nm. It only gets a 5-speed manual transmission.

Tata Bolt

The Tata Bolt is one of the first turbocharged petrol cars in the market. Powered by Revotron engine, the Bolt was targeted at car enthusiasts. It is powered by a 1.2-litre engine that produces a maximum of 89 Bhp and 140 Nm. The Bolt is also one of the first cars to get multi-drive modes in the affordable segment.

Tata Zest

Fiat Linea T-Jet 125

Priced at Rs. 9.8 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi

The Fiat Linea T-Jet is the most powerful petrol sedan available in the segment. The Linea T-Jet was the first car in the segment to offer a turbocharged petrol engine. Volkswagen Vento TSI

Volkswagen offers the same 1.2-litre turbocharged engine with the Vento mid-size sedan too. It is the second car that is available in the segment with a turbocharged petrol engine. The four-cylinder engine develops a maximum power of 103 Bhp and a peak torque of 175 Nm. Similar to the Polo GT TSI, the Vento TSI also gets a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.

Fiat Abarth Punto
