10 automatic SUVs of India; From Ford EcoSport to Jeep Compass – Affordable, Convenient & Practical

Automatic SUVs offer the best of everything that buyers seek from such vehicles – convenience, high-ground clearance that’s great for Indian roads and of course – a high-seating position, and in some cases massive street presence. Here are 10 such affordable, automatic SUVs on sale in India.

Ford EcoSport

Prices start from Rs. 9.34 lakhs

The recently launched, facelifted Ford EcoSport is India’s most affordable petrol-automatic SUV. The sub-4 meter compact SUV is powered by a 1.5 liter-3 cylinder petrol engine with 120 Bhp-150 Nm on tap. A 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox is offered.

Mahindra TUV300

Prices start from Rs. 9.34 lakhs

Like the EcoSport, the TUV300 is also a sub-4 meter compact SUV, but with a diesel engine under the hood. The TUV300 offers a 1.5 liter-3 cylinder turbo diesel engine with 84 Bhp-230 Nm, mated to a 5 speed automated manual transmission sourced from Ricardo. The TUV300 is a ladder frame SUV that’s rear wheel driven, unlike the monocoque bodied, front wheel driven EcoSport.

Mahindra Nuvosport

Prices start from Rs. 9.44 lakhs

The NuvoSport is another sub-4 meter compact SUV offered by Mahindra, again with a rugged, ladder frame chassis. This SUV shares its engine and gearbox with the TUV300, but gets a more powerful 100 Bhp-240 Nm state of tune. It’s slightly more pricier, at Rs. 9.44 lakhs. Like the TUV300, the Nuvosport also packs in seating for seven – a key selling point.

Renault Duster

Prices start from Rs. 10.15 lakhs

The Duster is the lowest priced automatic SUV in India that offers both petrol and diesel AT options. The petrol powered Duster uses a 1.5 liter-4 cylinder engine with 105 Bhp-140 Nm, and a CVT automatic gearbox. The diesel powered version uses a 1.5 liter-4 cylinder K9K turbocharged motor with 110 Bhp-240 Nm, and a 6 speed automated manual transmission. The petrol AT variants start from Rs. 10.15 lakhs, while the diesel AT variant is much more pricier, at 12.97 lakhs. The Duster is a 5 seater.

Honda BR-V

Prices start from Rs. 12.32 lakhs

The BR-V from Honda is the only 7 seat SUV in its segment, which also includes the Duster and Hyundai Creta. The BR-V uses Honda’s tried and tested 1.5 liter i-VTEC petrol engine with 118 Bhp-145 Nm, mated to a CVT automatic gearbox. The gearbox has 7 stepped shifts that give the driver additional control over gear shifting. The BR-V is front wheel driven.

Nissan Terrano

Prices start from Rs. 14.32 lakhs

The Terrano is essentially a differently styled Duster, but sold by Nissan, and at a much higher price tag. Apart from the styling, there’s no real reason for anyone to opt for the Terrano. In terms of mechanicals, it’s identical to the Duster, but doesn’t offer a petrol automatic option. It only sells with the diesel-AMT combination, which is exactly the same unit as that on the Duster.

Hyundai Creta

Prices start from Rs. 12.99 lakhs

India’s most popular compact SUV in the 4+ meter length category, the Hyundai Creta is offered with both petrol and diesel automatic variants. The petrol automatic variant uses a 1.6 liter motor with 122 Bhp-153 Nm, and a 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The diesel motor also displaces 1.6 liters but makes 126 Bhp-260 Nm. Like the petrol engine, the diesel also uses a 6 speed automatic gearbox. The diesel AT’s prices start from Rs. 13.65 lakhs.

Mahindra XUV500

Prices start from Rs. 14.87 lakhs

Coming to 7 seat SUVs, the XUV500 is Mahindra’s flagship vehicle, and is monocoque bodied. The SUV is offered with petrol and diesel AT options. Both the petrol and diesel engines are turbocharged, and displace 2.2 liters. The diesel makes 140 Bhp-330 Nm while the petrol pushes out 140 Bhp-320 Nm. The diesel AT has a lower starting price, and is also offered with both front wheel drive and all wheel drive variants. In contrast, the solitary petrol AT option is front wheel driven, and is priced at Rs. 15.49 lakhs.

Tata Hexa

Prices start from Rs. 14.82 lakhs

The Hexa crossover – Tata’s flagship product – is also the only diesel automatic vehicle sold by the automaker. The Hexa, which seats 7, offers a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine (154 Bhp-400 Nm) paired to a 6 speed automatic gearbox. Both rear wheel drive and all wheel drive options are available.

Jeep Compass

Prices start from Rs. 18.96 lakhs

The only mass market SUV from Jeep, the Compass, is currently sold with a petrol automatic option. The 1.4 liter turbo petrol engine, with 160 Bhp-250 Nm, pairs with a 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox. Acceleration is class-leading. The Compass AT is front wheel driven. Early next year, Jeep will offer diesel automatic variants of the Compass for the Indian market.
