Skoda is all set to launch three new cars this year in India. One of them will be the Kodiaq, Skoda’s new flagship SUV. Here are ten things you don’t know about the car.
What’s in the name?
The name Kodiaq is inspired by a breed of a brown bear named Kodiak. The bear breed lives on an island located at the Southwest of Alaska, USA. The bear is the largest brown bear species in the world.
The island named as Kodiak changed its name officially to Kodiaq after a marketing campaign by Skoda. The remaing of the town also involves a fair amount of money exchanged hands. Interestingly, Skoda does not sell vehicles in the USA market yet.
Will take on Toyota Fortuner
The Skoda Kodiaq will take on the well-established SUVs in the market like the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. The Kodiaq looks quite elegant with inspiration drawn from the Audi Q7 and looks quite upmarket. The Kodiaq will get seven seats like the rivals and it also gets a 4WD system that will make it as capable as the competitors.
The Skoda Kodiaq offers a wide range of engines in the international markets. In India, Skoda will initially launch only one engine in a single state of tune. The Kodiaq will get the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates a maximum of 147 bhp – 340 Nm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. At a later date, more powerful version of the vehicle can be expected.
Brimmed with features
The Kodiaq will come with a long list of features. To start with, there will be a full-LED headlamp system that has integrated LED DRLs. The Skoda Kodiaq also gets bird’s eye view camera that shows the vehicle’s surroundings from the top-view. There is a 6.5-inch infotainment system that comes as standard across the range. It gets Skoda SmartLink with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. There is also wireless charging for compatiable phones.
The car gets a 575W ten speaker system from Canton. The Kodiaq will offer standard leather seats with front powered seats among others. There are other features like blind spot detection system, adaptive cruise, and traffic jam assist that moves the vehicle forward automatically during a heavy traffic situation. However, apart from the blind spot detection system, the rest are not expected in the Indian vehicle due to radar restrictions.
Skoda’s first seven seater
The Skoda Kodiaq is the first ever Skoda vehicle that offers seven seats. The SUV is built on the same platform as the Skoda Superb and is also available in the five-seat configuration. However, the Indian market will only get the seven seat version of the vehicle. Skoda vehicles only offered up to five seats till now.
