The Indian car market has really come of age. Gone are the days when a few Marutis, a couple of Hyundais, and some Tatas were the only cars available to an average Indian car buyer. Today, we are pretty much spoilt for choice and have a huge range of cars to choose from. In spite of so many options, however, there are some models that have been comprehensively outselling their rivals. In this post, here, we take a look at all such cars.
The Alto twins have been clocking really high figures on the sales charts since forever now. Both the cars in the Alto range have attractive prices, decent performance, high mileage, and are easy to maintain. Also, the K10 variant even offers an optional AMT. While the Alto has been doing really well on the sales charts, Kwid is another small hatchback that has been successful in making a name for itself.
Maruti Wagon R
The WagonR is another best-seller from Maruti Suzuki. Much of this car’s success can be attributed to the tallboy architecture attractive prices, peppy yet frugal engine, and Maruti’s wide service network. The WagonR will soon get a complete model replacement in India. However, it doesn’t look like the car has lost any of popularity with the age. Even the WagonR offers an optional AMT, which further enhances its desirability. A close second to this car is the Tata Tiago.
Coming up next is the all-new Maruti Suzuki Swift, a car that seems to be enjoying an ever-lasting love-affair with the Indian car buyers. In its third-generation now, the Swift looks funky, offers a long list of features, high mileage, and has low maintenance costs. Moreover, the new Swift even offers an AMT on both the petrol and diesel engine options. All this has helped the Swift to become a huge success within just month of its launch. While the Swift has once again become a huge chartbuster, the Hyundai Grand i10 is another car that has been doing fairly well in this segment.
Another highly successful small car from Maruti Suzuki is the Baleno hatchback. The Baleno feels more premium than the Swift and offers similar levels of performance and mileage. Also, it has a comfortable cabin and is easy to maintain. While this car has got over a couple of years old now, it is still the highest-selling car in its segment by a huge margin. Baleno’s suspension has been tuned to give you a comfortable ride befitting of some pricier cars. The cabin is well-equipped and spacious. And of course, you benefit from all the advantages that come with owning a Maruti small car. Another car that we need to mention here is the Elite i20, which is a pretty good alternative to the Baleno.
Maruti Vitara Brezza
The Vitara Brezza is a car that has been immensely successful in its segment. While it recently got some fresh rivals in the form of the Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport, it stays totally unfazed. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the Brezza offers the highest mileage in its class. It also offers conventional looks that are rugged enough for a compact SUV. Of course, you also benefit from all the factors that make living with a Maruti a really simple affair. While we love the new EcoSport and the Nexon for various reasons, they still don’t compare with the Brezza when it comes to the sales performance.
Another Maruti that has been enjoying a free run of sorts is the Ertiga. The Ertiga came in at a time when there was no other MPV like it in the market. While the likes of Lodgy are bigger and pricier, cars like the Quanto and the Enjoy felt more utilitarian in comparison. Honda did launch the Mobilio to rival the Ertiga, but the Brio-based MPV couldn’t meet with much success. Hence, it was pulled off the shelves.
The Scorpio can be credited with outclassing the once immensely popular Tata Safari. The Mahindra Scorpio still sells in decent numbers due to its rugged looks, comfortable cabin, and powerful engine. Akin to the Ertiga, the Scorpio doesn’t have any immediate competition. While it faces some heat from smaller SUVs, it is still the highest-selling car of its type.
The Hyundai Creta is another best-seller that faces no immediate competition. In spite of a rather premium pricing, the Creta has been selling in great numbers. Much of this has to do with the attractive design, bold stance, premium cabin, powerful engines, and a long list of features.
The Mahindra XUV500 is another SUV from the popular Indian UV-maker that has been highly successful on the sales charts. The XUV500 offers bold looks, many features, spacious cabin, optional 4WD hardware, and a powerful engine. These have been reasons enough for the high success that this SUV enjoys. A new entrant that has been leaving major dents in the sales of the XUV500 is the Jeep Compass, a world-class premium 5-seater SUV that has suddenly taken the premium Indian SUV market by a storm.
Toyota Corolla Altis
While the D-segment sedans have pretty much lost their popularity to the similarly priced SUVs, the Corolla Altis still manages to find a few thousand takers every month. The Corolla Altis looks modern, has a powerful petrol engine, a comfortable cabin, and many features You also benefit from the highly-acclaimed after sales service that Toyota Kirloskar Motors has on offer. A close second to the Altis is the Hyundai Elantra.
Toyota Innova Crysta
The Innova Crysta is pricier than the 1st-generation Innova. Yet it manages to retain the high sales performance of its predecessor. Powerful engines, decent fuel efficiency, many features, and a comfortable cabin – there’s a lot that this premium MPV has on offer. Of course, you also benefit from the great after sales service of TKM.
The Fortuner is another Toyota that has been enjoying class-leading sales since time immemorial. The new Fortuner is powerful, looks great, has a comfortable cabin, and is even a capable off-roader. And then, there’s the great after sales support of Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
