While SUVs are gaining popularity in India, most of the times they are not viewed as fun or enthusiast vehicles. SUVs are quite practical because of the big ground clearance they provide alongside a commanding view of the road. Is it possible for SUVs to be enthusiast cars? Well, it is quite possible and here are ten such SUVs available in India.
Price: Rs. 8.99 lakhs
The Thar for long has been the first choice of many enthusiasts. The lifestyle SUV has been on the market since 2011 and at present, the Thar gets a massive potential for modifications. It is powered by a powerful 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine that churns out a maximum of 105 Bhp – 250 Nm. It gets two-door, a soft-top layout that can be customised in various different ways. The Thar gets a 5-speed transmission, low-ratio transfer case with on-demand 4X4 set-up, air-conditioning and a power steering.
Price: Rs. 6.13 lakhs
The Maruti Gypsy is one the oldest SUVs available in the Indian market. The petrol-engine powered Gypsy has been around for more than 30 years now and is the most affordable SUV money can buy in India. The off-roader is offered in both soft-top and hard-top versions. Both the versions are powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 80 Bhp and 110 Nm of peak torque. It also gets a low-ratio transfer case. The Gypsy is a basic vehicle and does not gets AC or power steering.

The Force Gurkha is easily recognisable on the road because of its uncanny resemblance to the Mercedes G-Wagen. The Gurkha is available in three versions – soft top, hard top and an extended wheelbase version. The Gurkha is also available in 4X2 version and attracts a lot of off-roaders. It gets a four-wheel drive system with a low-ratio transfer case, AC and power steering too. It is powered by a 2.6-litre diesel engine that produces a maximum power of 85 Bhp and 230 Nm. It gets a five-speed manual transmission.
Isuzu D-Max V-Cross
Price: Rs. 12.56 lakhs
The Isuzu V-Cross is solely responsible for making the pick-up truck segment popular in India. The lifestyle vehicle is quite big and is powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine that has an output of 134 Bhp-320 Nm. It comes paired with a 5-speed transmission that powers all the four wheels through shift-on-fly transfer as standard. The V-Cross gets dual airbags and ABS as standard. The V-Cross does the 0-100 Kph sprint in 13 seconds, which is quite quick.
Mahindra XUV 500 AWD
The Mahindra XUV 500 is the flagship car of the brand and is loaded with features. Mahindra recently launched a facelifted version of the vehicle with updated exteriors and a more powerful diesel engine. The AWD version of the XUV comes with an on-demand 4WD system that misses out on a low-range transfer case. However, the Mahindra XUV 500 is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel engine that produces a maximum of 153 Bhp-360Nm and is mated to a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. This makes the XUV 500 quite quick and also the AWD system makes it capable enough to reach a lot of unimaginable places.
Renault Duster AWD
Price: Rs. 13.79 lakhs
The Renault Duster AWD has blazing acceleration, with the all wheel drive layout helping the compact SUV to get to a flying start. The Duster AWD manages the 0-100 Kph run in just 10.96 seconds, making it nearly as quick as the Creta but the AWD option definitely makes it much more enthusiast focussed. It’s powered by a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine with 108 Bhp-248 Nm on tap.
Jeep Compass Trailhawk
Expected launch date: June/July 2018
Jeep Compass has become the best selling vehicle in the segment. The American manufacturer is now planning to bring the Trailhawk, which is the more adventurous version of the vehicle in India. The car has been already spied at a dealer stockyard and is expected to be launched by mid-2018.
The car will be powered by the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 170 Bhp – 350 Nm. It gets a 9-speed automatic transmission and many off-road friendly aids. The Trailhawk version gets Jeep’s Active Drive low-range 4WD, hill descent and a new Rock Mode that makes the vehicle more capable.
Ford EcoSport S
Expected launch date: May 2018
Ford recently launched the updated version of the EcoSport. Now a sportier version of the same will be launched soon. Similar to the Figo S and the Aspire S, it will be known as EcoSport S. It will be offered with petrol and diesel engines. The car has been already been spotted in the Indian market. The new EcoSport will re-introduce the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine. The 1.5-litre diesel engine will remain the same as the regular version.
The changes are expected in the suspension department making the EcoSport S much sharper than the regular version. The steering is also expected to be sharper than the regular version of the current model. The exteriors will be more aggressive with blacked out parts and sportier alloy wheels.
Tata Safari Storme
Price: Rs. 13.72 lakhs
The Safari Storme 4X4 is the most powerful 7-seater available in India. The torque monster is powered by a 2.2-litre Varicor turbocharged diesel engine that produces a maximum of 154 Bhp – 400 Nm. The SUV can reach a speed of 100 Kph from the standstill in just 12.8 seconds. It gets a 6-speed transmission that transmits power to all the four wheels through a Borg Warner transfer case. It also comes with low and range transfer case that makes it quite versatile.
Mahindra Scorpio 4X4
Price: Rs. 16.01 lakhs
Mahindra updated the Scorpio in late 2017 with slight changes and a more powerful engine in the top-end variant of the vehicle. The new Scorpio’s S7, S11 and S11 4WD options get the 2.2-litre mHawk engine that generates a maximum of 140 Bhp – 320 Nm. The 4X4 version of the Scorpio is quite capable and also gets a low-ratio transfer case. The Scorpio has remained one of the favourite choices of many in the Indian market for a long time now and it also attracts a lot of enthusiasts because of the loaded feature list and now, a more powerful engine.
Mahindra Scorpio Getaway

Mahindra Scorpio Getaway is the pick-up version of the Scorpio SUV. It is based on the pre-facelift version and Mahindra is yet to the update the car with new looks. The Getaway is a double cabin with space for five people. The Scorpio Getaway is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk engine that generates a maximum power 120 bhp – 280 Nm. It is available in both 4X2 and 4X4 versions. The AWD also gets a low-ratio transfer case, which makes it much more capable.
Hyundai Tucson diesel
Rs. 19.99 lakhs
The Hyundai Tucson is an acceleration king among the SUVs in India. The Tucson is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces a maximum of 182 Bhp – 400 Nm. The car can go to 100 kph from zero in just 9.48 seconds and is the quickest SUV in the segment at the moment. It is available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission. The Tucson also gets an AWD version but there is no low-ratio transfer case.
