Volkswagen India has launched the 2011 Passat diesel luxury sedan in Mumbai today. Available only in three trim levels, the Passat TDI Trendline is priced at Rs. 20.80 lakhs, the Comfortline at Rs. 23.80 lakhs and the Highline (automatic) at Rs. 25.65 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. The new Passat will be available in 5 shades: white, pearl, black, silver and brown.
The 2011 Passat is actually the seventh-generation model and has been around for 37 years, selling over 15 million units across the world. It is 4 mm longer than the previous-generation model and borrows a few design cues from its bigger sibling, the Volkswagen Phaeton. The front of the new Passat is sharp and crisp depicting the brand’s new global design language.
The headlamps have integrated LED lights that lend the car a modern and contemporary look, placing it far ahead of competition such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The rear with its new elegant tail lamps makes the Passat appear visually lower.
The interior has many chrome-coated surfaces that should delight Indian buyers. The dashboard design is classy with the typical chunky Volkswagen 3-spoke steering, chrome-ringed dials and large number fonts for easy readability.
The 2011 Passat comes with plenty of cool and convenient features such as the new Park Assist feature that allows the car to automatically steer itself into the parking space upon the touch of a button. Another innovative feature is the Easy Open Boot that automatically opens the boot door when you place your leg under the rear bumper.
The new Passat is powered by a 2.0-litre BlueMotion diesel (CR TDI) motor that produces 170 bhp of maximum power and 350 Nm of maximum torque. The benefits of BlueMotion comprise a fuel-efficiency, start-stop technology, brake energy recuperation, gear shift indicator, particulate filter and DSG (Direct Shift Gear) dual clutch gearbox. The super-reduced rolling resistance tyres, extra lightweight wheels and low-friction drive shafts help in delivering a better fuel efficiency.
The new Passat, with its equipment and features, throws a stiff challenge to the likes of Honda Accord V6, Nissan Teana, Skoda Superb and Toyota Camry.
