Rajasthan seems to be the hot new destination for all car launches in India. On Friday, BMW, too, launched the 2012 BMW 6-series 650i Convertible at the beautiful Leela Palace Kempinski Hotel in Udaipur. The price of the new 650i is Rs. 95 lakh (ex-showroom, Udaipur).
Speaking at the launch held BMW India boss Andreas Schaaf said, “The new BMW 6-Series Convertible with its breathtaking aesthetics is the perfect vehicle for an exclusive lifestyle.” He added that the BMW 650i’s elegant silhouette, torquey engine, perfect road-holding and refined interiors with perfection to the smallest detail, create an ultra-luxurious open-top driving experience that could not possibly get any better. Engine and performance
The 650i convertible is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre, V8 belting out 407 hp of maximum power at 5,500 – 6,400 rpm and 610 Nm of maximum torque at 1,750 – 4,000 rpm through an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. The 6-Series accelerates from 0 – 100 km/hr in just 4.9 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/hr.
BMW 650i exterior
The 650i design is inspired by the elegance of flowing water. The 6-Series convertible’s strength is the extended front overhang and the broad rear. But the chiseled-out lines hide the car’s larger proportion and enhances the dynamic characteristics. The headlamps have LED rings that act as daytime running lights and the low positioning of kidney grille with a slight forward leaning, makes it comparable to some of the sports cars.
BMW 650i interior
The 6 Series convertible has a fully automatic roof that opens or closes at the touch of a button within 19 seconds at speeds of up to 40 km/hr. With the roof closed, the 650i still offers adequate headroom as it is a genuine 2+2 seater.
The easy-to-read Head Up display requires minimal time to read the information while driving. The instrument, with its clear distinct colors, indicates easily readable pedestrian warning, lane change warning, correct lane suggestions, etc. The Head Up display, in particular, projects the information on to the windscreen which can be read at all lighting conditions. The height of the Head Up display can be adjusted according to the driver’s eye level.
Control display and camera system
The instrument panel has free-standing control display that has optional professional navigation system, a 10.2-inch screen showing BMW’s iDrive. The standard equipment includes the 7-inch control display. BMW’s innovative ConnectedDrive has 5 cameras, two front-end side view cameras integrated into the bumper, a rear view camera for parking and two top view cameras integrated in the two wing mirrors.
The camera system gives out information regarding the space available on either sides of the car as well as the rear, and the display shows interactive lane lines to help the driver while parking the car.
BMW 650i colours
The 650i is available in 8 colours: Vermillion Red, Orion Silver, Black Sapphire, Havanna, Deep Sea Blue and Space Grey and Titanium Silver – all of which are metallic shades while the Alpine White is the only non-metallic colour. The interiors of the 650i Convertible has Dakota leather or exclusive Nappa leather in combination with precious wood or aluminium interior trims.
BMW offers optional Nappa leather for the instrument panel and upper sections of the door trim and side panels. An optional contrasting stitching includes attractive colors: vermilion red, ivory white, cinnamon brown or ‘nappa black’ that perfectly matches the rest of the interior.
BMW Efficient Dynamics and Driving Dynamics together enhance the driving experience. Standard features such as brake energy regeneration, electromechanical power steering, aerodynamic design, optional Adaptive Drive, all play a significant role in making the 650i a fun to drive convertible at all times.
The BMW 6-Series convertible has a standard Dynamic Driving Control that has a switch gear to select normal or sport driving mode. Based on the drive mode selected, the engine’s acceleration and performance, chassis settings as well as the transmission are tuned automatically.
BMW has aims of becoming the No.1 luxury car maker in India for the third consecutive time. The company’s next launch in the country would likely be the BMW X3 (Sports Activity Vehicle) in June. With rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi, too, in a race to grab the top spot, expect plenty more car launches from the trio this year.
