2012 Fiat Linea and Punto launched, prices increased!

Fiat India today launched the 2012 versions of their Linea sedan and Punto premium hatchback at the Lalit Hotel, New Delhi. The 2012 Linea starts at Rs. 6.83 lakh which an increase of Rs. 32,000 compared to its older price, while the 2012 Punto starts at Rs. 4.81 lakh which is up by Rs.50,000 from the earlier Rs. 4.31 lakh price tag.

The 2012 Linea will compete with cars like the Honda City, top end variants of the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Maruti Suzuki Sx4, Hyundai Verna etc. The 2012 Punto will face stiff competition from cars like the Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo and the popular Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Looks, space and comfort

In terms of looks the new Linea looks much like the outgoing model with minor changes on the exterior. It is an elegant looking car and its Italian design will likely rope in its own set of customers. The Linea is spacious with ample leg and headroom for the front passengers. The rear seats too are reasonably spacious although headroom may be an issue for tall passengers.

The ride will likely be just as comfortable as it was in the older model; which means it well soak pot holes and go over bad roads with relative ease. The Linea is now available in a new “Oceanic Blue” color, leather seats with chrome interiors and 16” alloy wheels.

It also sports refreshed interiors with a light beige theme, comprising of fabric seats, floor carpet, dashboard and door trims.

Performance and mileage

Fiat has made no changes in the 2012 Linea as far as engine and transmission are concerned. It will be powered by the same engines as in the current model. The petrol model will be powered by a 1.4-liter FIRE motor that puts out 88 bhp of power while the 1.4 litre turbocharged T-Jet petrol engine that puts out 113 bhp and the 1.3-litre MULTIJET diesel motor that churns out 92 bhp of power.

Fiat claims that the Linea 1.3 Multijet diesel now has a mileage of 20.4 kmpl while the 1.4 petrol Linea will have a mileage of 14.6 kmpl.

Price and features

The prices of the 2012 Linea have been increased by an average of Rs. 60,000. The petrol Linea is now available in seven variants (four petrol and three diesels). The prices of the Linea T-Jet and T-Jet Plus variants will remain unchanged while the Active and Dynamic models will now cost Rs. 6.83 lakh and 7.80 lakh respectively.

The diesel Linea will be available in Active (Rs.7.83 lakh), Dynamic (Rs.8.83 lakh) and Emotion (Rs.9.18 lakh).

The new Linea gets an integrated audio system from base version, Auto AC, ABS with EBD, new alloy wheels, airbags and Bluetooth connectivity from the mid version onwards. Fiat has improved the Linea’s ground clearance, which is now 185 mm. It also gets a better AC and efforts have been made for noise reduction on the diesel variants. The new segment features include rain sensors and auto switch on/off head lamps.

Looks, space and comfort

No changes have been made to the exteriors of the 2012 Punto and it will continue to look the same as the outgoing variant from the exterior. Space and comfort too will remain the same apart from the addition of grey –black interiors and a dual tone dashboard.

Performance and mileage

The 2012 Punto will be powered by the same engines found on the outgoing model. At present, the Punto is powered by a 1.2-litre (1,172 cc) FIRE petrol motor that puts out 67 bhp of power and has ARAI-certified mileage of 15.20 kmpl. The 1.4 litre FIRE petrol Punto has a claimed mileage of 14.6 kmpl while 1.3 litre diesel variants have a mileage of 20.3 kmpl.

The Punto is also powered by a 1.4-litre FIRE petrol motor that puts out 88.7 bhp of power and has ARAI-certified mileage of 14.03 kmpl while the Punto diesel is powered by 1.3-litre Multijet motor that makes 75 bhp of power and has ARAI-certified mileage of 19.90 kmpl. The 2012 Punto will get an improved ground clearance of 195 mm for base 1.2 litre variant while the 1.4 litre and 1.3 litre Punto will come with a ground clearance of 185 mm.

Price and features

Prices for the Punto petrol variants have been increased by roughly Rs. 50,000 variant by variant while prices of the Punto diesel variants have been increased by roughly Rs.37,000. The 2012 Punto will be available in seven variants (Three petrol and four diesel).

The petrol Active variant costs Rs. 4.81 lakh, the Dynamic variant costs Rs. 5.04 lakh and the Emotion variant costs Rs. 6.54. The diesel Active variant costs Rs. 5.48 lakh, the Dynamic costs Rs. 6.11 lakh, while the top of the line Punto diesel Emotion variant costs Rs. 6.71 lakh. The Punto 90 HP will be sold as it is at its present price (Rs.6.85 lakh). The base variants of the Punto sport an integrated audio system and central locking along with front power windows.
