A rugged pick up truck/Ute spawning a SUV isn’t something new and is a strategy that saves time and money. Three prominent SUVs that have taken this route in India are the Toyota Fortuner (Hilux based), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (Triton based) and the Ford Endeavour (Ranger based). Now, Nissan is planning to do the same with its Navara pickup truck, which was recently unveiled by the company. At the Global Media Drive of the pickup truck, Chief Vehicle Engineer Takashi Fukui told the folks over at Autoindustriya that the company was working on a a new Navara-based ladder frame SUV.
Upon being asked about it, Fukui said, “We have just begun the development of it.” The SUV might come down to Indian shores too in future seeing the fact that the Indian market has an affinity towards SUVs. Also, since the X-Trail has been discontinued in India, the Navara promises to be the right SUV to fill in the boots of the not-so-popular X-Trail. The Navara is expected to arrive at a price bracket between Rs. 20-25 lakhs. A time frame about the SUVs arrival into the market is yet to be revealed.
The SUV will be going up against the likes of Fortuner and Endeavour (both are due for a next generation model next year) when it touches base in India and globally. One of the highlights of the Navara pickup truck is its rear suspension which uses coil springs.
While majority of the pickups up use leaf springs, the Navara – with the exception for the crew cab and cab/chassis versions- rides on a 5-link rear suspension (though still a rigid axle) and coil springs which is one of the important things for comfortable ride in a SUV based on a truck.
The interiors of the pickup are premium enough to be carried forth to the SUV. It comes with a 2.5-litre petrol and diesel motors, which will come mated to a 6 speed manual or a 7 speed automatic transmission. The same powertrains could be carried over to the SUV as well.
