The 2016 Toyota Fortuner will soon be revealed and the luxury SUV will arrive into India next year, replacing the current-generation model. The 2016 Fortuner continues to share its underpinnings with the Hilux pick up truck, with the second generation version of the SUV using a revamped IMV platform, which also underpins the 8th generation pick up truck. Apart from sharing its platform with the Hilux, the new SUV will also borrow heavily from the Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA). In terms of design, the new Fortuner will look sharper than before, with styling taking an edgier route.
This is a conscious attempt from Toyota, a brand that’s very keen to leave its stolid image behind. Weight reduction is likely on the new vehicle, although the rugged ladder frame chassis will be retained. The current crop of 2.5 liter and 3 liter turbo diesel engine with four cylinder layouts are expected to be retained. Power and torque outputs could be tweaked for more performance though. The 5 speed manual and automatic gearbox options are also expected to be retained. Rear wheel and four wheel drive options will be available, as is the case currently.
The next-gen Fortuner will retain its 7 seat layout. The interiors could get a major revamp given the premium touch the new SUV will get in terms of pricing. For the Indian car market, Toyota will continue taking the CKD assembly route for the Fortuner. Only diesel variants of the SUV will be sold here, while international markets get the petrol variants too. The SUV is the best seller in its segment, with Fortuner sales single-handedly beating the combined sales of all the luxury SUVs in its segment. The 2016 Indian Auto Expo is expected to provide the big stage for the new Fortuner’s arrival into the country.
