Toyota Camry is one of the highest-selling hybrid cars in India. The luxury executive sedan competes with the likes of Skoda Superb and the Honda Accord hybrid in the Indian market and is very popular. Toyota is now working on the 8th generation of the Camry and the upcoming model has been caught testing in India under heavy camouflage.
The current generation of the Camry entered India six years back. The eighth-generation of Camry has been launched in the international markets and current tests in India suggest that it will be soon launched in the Indian market. The Camry has been ruling the segment for a long time now and is very popular in the Indian market. The new Camry offers an array of changes including an updated front-end, rear design and the body itself.
The eighth-generation Camry looks much sportier than the current version of the car that is on sale in India. It gets a horizontal multi-slat air dam below the bumper and a sleek grille. The headlamps have been updated too and look much sleeker and modern than the current model in India. Overall, the eighth-generation of Camry looks much sportier and sleeker. It is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).
It also gets a new set of engines in the international line-up but the details of the Indian-spec vehicle are not confirmed yet. Toyota is expected to continue to offer the hybrid system in the Camry and with the arrival of the BS VI norms in 2020, the manufacturer may only offer the hybrid model in the Indian market. Currently, Toyota also offers a non-hybrid version of the sedan. It should be noted that Honda launched the all-new Accord in India last year and it is only available with the hybrid variant. Skoda Superb, on the other hand, is yet to offer a hybrid system.
The new Camry is expected to be priced a bit more than the current version in India. However, the government is mulling a new tax slab that may allow Toyota to put a lower price tag on the sedan. Currently, the Honda Accord is priced at Rs. 43.21 lakhs and the Skoda Superb is priced at Rs. 25.59 lakhs. The Camry hybrid is priced at Rs. 37.22 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
