How the all-new 2020 Mahindra Thar was designed & built [Video]

After a long wait, Mahindra finally unveiled the all-new Thar SUV for our market on the Independence day. The SUV looks good and is much more mature than the older version. It has grown in size and the number of features that it offers has also increased. Mahindra has definitely worked hard in making this new Thar a step above the older version and here we have a video that shows what all things were considered during the development stage of this popular SUV.

The video has been shared by Mahindra on Thar’s official youtube channel. One of the main suggestions that came in from owners of old-gen Thar was that they loved Thar as an off-road vehicle but when it comes to on-road performance, they did not enjoy the experience. This was one of the main challenges that team Mahindra had to face. In order to make it more road friendly, they made several changes without compromising on the off-road capabilities for which Thar is famous for.

The team started working on improving the ride quality and handling of the Thar on road. For that, they reconstructed the front and rear suspension, widened the track and the weight of front and rear axle was also redistributed. All these measures have improved the ride and handling of the new Thar and it can now easily do 150-160 kmph on a highway. They have also worked on strengthening the platform so that it can handle a bit more abuse than before.

Safety norms have also become more stricter and Mahindra had kept that in mind as well. The all-new Thar gets, dual airbags, ABS, ESP and ISO fix seats and so on. Just like safety norms, emission norms have also become stricter and Mahindra for the first time introduced a petrol engine in Thar along with a diesel unit.

Mahindra Thar is now powered by a 2.2 litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates 130 Bhp and 320 Nm of torque and a 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine from recently introduced mStallion series generates 150 Bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Both are available with a proper 4×4 transfer case and the petrol and diesel engines get manual and automatic gearbox options too. Mahindra will be announcing the prices for the all-new Thar on 2 October 2020. We expect prices to start from around 11-12 lakhs for the base AX trims, going up to Rs. 14-15 lakhs for the top-end automatic LX trims.
