Jeep Compass is the most popular car from the brand in the Indian market and it has been around for quite some time now. Last year, Mahindra introduced the all-new Thar to the Indian market and it has become a popular choice in the market too. Well, the Compass and the Thar are two very different vehicles and belong to different segments. But there are many who compare both of them to each other, especially in the terms of power and capability. While a Jeep Compass can definitely outrun the all-new Mahindra Thar on a highway, can it win a tug of war? Here is a video that shows the same.
The video made by the Heat17 YouTube channel shows the pre-facelift version of the Jeep Compass diesel automatic fighting it out against the Mahindra Thar. The Mahindra Thar used here is an all-new model powered by a diesel engine and gets a manual transmission. On the other hand, the Jeep Compass gets a 2.0-litre diesel engine and an automatic transmission. Since this variant of the Jeep Compass does not get a 4X4 system, Thar’s 4X4 system was not engaged at all. All the rounds here are done with the Thar in 4X2 mode.
In the first round, the Jeep Compass and the Thar are tied to each other and both the vehicles have traction control system on. The Jeep Compass struggles to keep its ground but the Thar dominates the first round and slowly pulls the Jeep Compass across the line. The Jeep Compass struggles to find traction and is swept away by the Thar.
In the second round, the traction control is turned off. Both Jeep Compass and the Mahindra Thar throw dirt because of the spinning wheels. However, the Thar slowly pulls the Compass over the line to win the second round too. Surprises? Well, none exactly.
The Mahindra Thar diesel gets a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 130 Bhp and peak torque of 320 Nm. The Jeep Compas gets a 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 172 Bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm. Yes, the Compass is much more powerful and gets more torque compared to the Thar. However, the Thar has wider tyres that help it with the grip and it gets dual-purpose tyres too. The success of any off-roading vehicle depends on the tyres and Thar has better and wider tyres here.
The Thar remains an RWD vehicle in the 4X2 mode and that is quite helpful while towing or winning a tug-of-war. The rear axle remains live which means that it is in a perfect position to pull the weight and also push the weight of the Thar. In front-wheel drive, the front wheels have to pull all the weight and that can be cumbersome. Independently, the Jeep Compass 4X4 can do some serious off-roading.
