As we know that Mahindra is working on an all-new generation of the XUV500 and the Scorpio. The XUV500 was expected to hit the Indian market in mid of 2021 whereas the Scorpio was expected to get launched in the second half of 2021. However, according to the reports from Autocar India, both the SUVs can be delayed. The reason behind this is the global shortage of semiconductors. The semiconductor chips are used to manufacture ECU or Electronic Control Unit and other electronics that control various electronic functions of the vehicles.
Mahindra is not the only manufacturer that is facing this issue. The shortage of semiconductors is happening all over the world. Due to this, all automotive manufacturers are facing the issue. The supply chain of the vehicles is adversely affected by this. These chips are a crucial component for the infotainment system, safety equipment, ECU, driver aids etc. Without these components, the car cannot be sold to consumers. The automotive industry is not the only one who uses these semiconductors, they have also used consumer goods, gaming consoles, mobiles, electronic devices and a lot more.
Because of the semiconductors shortage, the Thar is being shipped to dealers without the touchscreen infotainment system which will now be installed by the dealer itself before delivering the SUV to the consumer. Due to this the waiting period of the Thar is increasing. Mahindra is expecting the shortage will continue so they would have to delay the launches so that they do not face the long booking periods that they faced with the Thar. Even Ford was affected by the semiconductors issue and forced them to stop the production temporarily at their Chennai plant.

2021 XUV500
The 2021 XUV500 will come with an all-new exterior as well as the interior. Where the exterior will be more aggressive than before, the interior will get a more up-market feel with more premium materials. It will come with LED headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps, flush sitting door handles, roof rails and new alloy wheels. For the interior there will be two horizontal sitting screens just like we have seen on some Mercedes-Benz models. The centre one will be the touchscreen infotainment system while the second one will be the digital instrument cluster. Powering the new XUV500 will be a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine that will produce close to 185 to 190 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 380 Nm. There will also be a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which will produce around 180 PS of max power and 380 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
2021 Scorpio
The 2021 Scorpio will be larger in dimensions than the current one. It will be based on a re-worked ladder frame chassis. This should improve the handling dynamics and ride quality of the SUV. The overall design now looks more butch and boxy while the interior will get better-built materials. It will be offered with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine and a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine. The diesel engine will produce around 140 PS while the petrol engine is expected to produce around 160 PS. Both the engines will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
