2022 Ford Ecosport: What the next generation of the compact SUV will look like

The compact-SUV segment is the most competitive segment in the Indian automotive market. More and more manufacturers keep launching their compact SUVs. The most recent ones being Renault and Nissan who launched their vehicles. Similarly, other manufacturers who already have their compact SUVs keep updating them with more features so that their product stays competitive in the market. The Ecosport is currently the oldest design in the segment. Yes, Ford recently launched the SE variant which does not come with a boot-mounted spare tyre but still only from the rear the SE looks different from the regular Ecosport.

Here, we have a rendering of the 2021 Ecosport that has been done based on the Ford Equator, which is a full-size SUV launched in the international market. This is the unknown SUV that was spotted earlier in the spy shots. The rendering has been done by SRK Designs and the video has been uploaded on YouTube on his channel.

The rendering has been done only for the front of the SUV. The regular headlamp setup has been removed and replaced with the split headlamp setup that the Equator is using. Above is a LED Daytime Running Lamp with a kink that integrates with the grille surround. The turn indicator is also placed just below the LED Daytime Running Lamp. While the three LED projector headlamps sit in the lower half of the bumper. A similar headlamp design has been seen on the Renault Kiger. The grille is also larger and gets a black surround. The airdam is wide and it also gets a faux skid plate finished in silver.

At the side, there are new alloy wheels, blacked-out outside rearview mirrors with LED turn indicators on them, roof rails and flared wheel arches. There are also some new alloy wheels that we see here. The proportions and design have not been changed much.

Till now it was expected that the 2021 Ecosport will be using the new 1.2-litre mStallion petrol engine that comes with a turbocharger and direct injection. The engine is developed by Mahindra and we first saw it at the Auto Expo 2020. The engine produces 130 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 230 Nm. This the engine that will be used by the Mahindra XUV300 Sportz. However, as now the alliance between Ford and Mahindra broke, we do not know what will Ecosport use.

Currently, Ford offers a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine with the Ecosport. The petrol engine puts out 122 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 149 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The diesel engine produces 100 PS of max power and 215 Nm of peak torque. It comes with 5-speed manual gearbox only. There is no automatic gearbox on offer with the diesel engine.

The Ford Ecosport’s price starts from Rs. 7.99 lakhs ex-showroom and goes all the way up to Rs. 11.49 lakhs ex-showroom. The Ecosport competes against the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
