Mahindra has been working on the new generation of Scorpio for almost three years now. The test mules of the SUV have been spotted in India and in other countries also. Now, we now have some more details regarding the engine and prices of the 2022 Scorpio that is shared by RavenAvi on Team-BHP.
The media reports say that Mahindra will be following the same timeline for the new-gen Scorpio that was followed for the Thar and XUV700. So, the new SUV will premiere on 15th August of next year, while the price reveal and bookings will start on 2nd October 2022. The deliveries of the 2022 Scorpio will start from 1st November.
Having said that, Mahindra might pre-pone the premiere of the 2022 Scorpio to June next year. This is because Scorpio will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in June next year. Even if Mahindra advances the premiere, the rest of the launch timeline will stay the same. One reason behind this is the shortage of semiconductors. Mahindra already has a huge backlog of vehicles and if they open bookings for the 2022 Scorpio, the backlog might increase.

Engine and gearbox
Mahindra will offer the new generation Scorpio with two engine options. There would be a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that comes with direct injection and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both the engines are already doing duty on the Thar and the XUV700 and are known for their refinement and power delivery.
The diesel engine is expected to be offered in two states of tune just like Mahindra is doing with the XUV700. The lower variants will produce 130 bhp of max power. The power output is the same as the Thar so we expect the torque output will be around 300 Nm or slightly more considering Scorpio is a larger vehicle than the Thar. The lower variants will be offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The higher variants will get a more powerful state of tune. It will produce 160 to 170 bhp of max power. We have not experienced this state of tune yet. We are assuming that the torque output for this tune could be around 360 Nm. This is because the MX Trim of XUV700 produces 360 Nm with 155 bhp of max power. The higher variants will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
The diesel engine will also come with a 4×4 drivetrain on the higher variants. There would be terrain modes and drive modes on offer. The engine and gearbox have been calibrated perfectly for a smooth experience. In terms of driveability, the 2022 Scorpio has scored high even in the 4 High and 4 Low modes while using the 4×4 system. The new-gen Scorpio has been extensively tested by team Mahindra Adventure and the feedback is very positive.
The prices of the new-gen Scorpio are expected to start from Rs. 12.99 lakhs ex-showroom for the diesel engine with 160 to 170 bhp tune. We assume that the base variant of the Scorpio with the petrol engine could get start from Rs. 9.99 lakhs ex-showroom.
