2022 Mahindra Scorpio spotted in Khardung La

Mahindra’s big launch this year will be the new generation of Scorpio. The homegrown manufacturer has been testing it for quite some time now. The SUV has spotted testing in cities, on highways, at high altitudes and even in foreign countries. Here, we have two videos of the Scorpio. The video was shot by Subal Suchdev in Khardung La.

Mahindra was probably doing high altitude testing to ensure that the Scorpio does not face any issues while running on thin air. Earlier, we also saw a Scorpio going over a rough trail in the Ladakh region.

New-gen Scorpio looks bigger than current Scorpio

The new gen-Scorpio does look larger in dimensions when we compare it to the current generation of the Scorpio. It looks much wider and longer. This has already helped in increasing the road presence of the Scorpio. Moreover, larger dimensions also mean that there would be more space for the occupants. This also means that Mahindra would be able to position the SUV higher than the current Scorpio. So, it will be more expensive than the current model.

2022 Scorpio will be more powerful

The 2022 Scorpio will use a new set of engines that we have seen on the Thar and XUV700. So, there would be a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both would come with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The diesel engine will produce around 130 bhp of max power in the lower variants. The torque output could be somewhere around 300 Nm, considering that Thar gets the same tune. Moreover, we think that lower variants with this tune would only be offered with a manual gearbox.

The higher variant’s diesel engine would produce around 160-170 bhp of max power. We have not yet experienced this tune on any Mahindra vehicle. But we can expect the torque output to be more than 360 Nm. This is because XUV700’s MX variant produces 155 bhp and 360 Nm. As of now, we do not know how much power and torque will the  turbo petrol engine will produce.

More details

The new generation of Scorpio would be around 100 to 150 kgs lighter than the current Scorpio. This would help with performance and fuel efficiency. It will come with hydraulic steering but Mahindra has improved it and ensured that it is lighter than the current Scorpio. This would be a boon in the city.

Mahindra has been giving special attention to safety ratings lately. The XUV300, Thar and XUV700 have scored good crash test ratings and we expect the same to continue with the upcoming Scorpio.

We are still not expecting the Scorpio to come with a panoramic sunroof, it should be a conventional electric sunroof. But there could be the Sony derived sound system. Mahindra might decrease the number of speakers to save some money. We already know that the Scorpio will come with a 4×4 system, there would be a circular knob in the centre console that has been spotted in some previous spy shots.
