Maruti Suzuki will be launching the new generation of the Brezza by the end of May this year. Now, we have got more information about the engine and gearbox of the upcoming compact SUV. According to Autocar India, Maruti Suzuki will be updating the engine and gearbox of the 2022 Brezza also.
It was earlier expected that the 2022 Brezza would also get the new K12C DualJet VVT petrol engine from the upcoming 2022 Ertiga and 2022 XL6. Now, the media reports suggest that this is true. The new K12C engine will replace the existing K12B petrol engine.
Both the engines are four-cylinder, naturally aspirated units with a displacement of 1.5-litre. The K12B engine produces 104 Ps of max power whereas the new K12C engine is expected to produce 115 PS of max power. The torque output of the K12B engine is 138 Nm, the official figure for the K12C engine is not yet out but we are expecting it to be around 140 Nm. As standard, the new engine will also come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The K12C engine uses two injectors per cylinder instead of one injector per cylinder. This gives the manufacturer more precise control over-fueling. There would also be an idle start-stop which will shut down the engine when the car comes to a halt and will also restart the engine when the clutch is pressed. This will help in increasing the fuel economy and reducing emissions. Eventually, there would also be a CNG powered version of the Brezza.
Maruti Suzuki will also be finally upgrading to a new 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission that will be replacing the existing 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The 4-speed auto debuted back in 2003 and is still doing duty on some of the vehicles.
The new gearbox would support paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel and there would also be some kind of sports or manual mode. The new transmission would shift more quickly and more smoothly than the current unit. One of the biggest advantages of the new transmission is that it is a 6-speed unit so it would be able to extract more fuel efficiency from the engine because the engine would be doing fewer revs at triple-digit speeds while going down a highway. Also, it is being said that the new transmission would help the engine in meeting the upcoming emission norms.
The spy shots of the new Brezza have leaked already online. We do know that it will now come with an electric sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, an SOS feature, cruise control and 6 airbags on the higher-end variants. The dashboard would be revised, the instrument cluster would be new and the steering wheel would also be borrowed from the Swift. It would still be a multi-function unit. The highlight of the dashboard will be the new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that we have already seen on the 2022 Baleno.
