2022 MG Hector spied ahead of launch

It seems like MG has started working on a facelift of Hector. A camouflaged test mule was recently spotted while it was on a test. MG already has equipped the global-spec Hector with ADAS technology. There is a possibility that MG might bring the ADAS features to India with a new Savvy variant. MG is already offering some ADAS features with their Astor and Gloster.

The Advanced Driver Aids System would include a blind-spot monitoring system, front collision warning, adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, high beam assist, lane departure warning, speed assist system, front collision warning etc.

MG could update the front and rear bumpers of the 2022 Hector. It might get a slightly aggressive looking set of bumpers. The rear bumper is definitely new because it does not have space for the exhaust like the current MG Hector gets. The alloy wheels are the same ones that we have seen on the current Hector.

There could be some changes to the interior also. It can get revised materials for the upholstery and dashboard. The touchscreen infotainment could be new because the Hector is the only SUV in MG’s line-up that comes with a vertical infotainment system. The Gloster and Astor come with a horizontal infotainment system that just has a better user interface when compared to Hector. If this happens, then the dashboard would have to be redesigned. However, there is also a chance that MG only updates the user interface of its infotainment system of Hector. MG might also add a digital instrument cluster.

We do not expect any major updates to its powertrain of Hector. So, it will continue to come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine that is sourced from Fiat and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The petrol engine produces 143 bhp of max power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-step CVT automatic transmission.

The diesel engine produces 170 Ps of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to only a 6-speed manual gearbox. This is the same engine that Jeep uses for the Meridian and Compass. Tata is also using the same engine for the Harrier and Safari. We hope that MG offers an automatic gearbox with a diesel engine.

Features

The current MG Hector is very well equipped when it comes to features. Some of the highlighting features are a 360-degree parking camera, heated ORVMs, up to 6 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, cornering fog lamps, LED headlamps and tail lamps, connected car technology, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, wireless charger, a powered tailgate and much more.

Rivals

It has to compete against the Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. Because of its pricing, it also has to compete against the Mahindra XUV700, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Prices and variants

The current Hector starts at Rs. 14.15 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 20.11 lakhs ex-showroom. It is offered in four variants, there is Style, Shine, Smart, and Sharp. With the facelift, MG might also add a new top-end Savvy variant.
